Hmph... okie, first it is pretty easy to avoid doubleclick entirely. I put an entry for ad.doubleclick.net as 127.0.0.1 in the host file of all my computers - yes, windows has one too (and, additionally, any other such ad banner servies), which seems to have killed all such ad banners.
As, i'm sure with a lot of people, the big thing that bothers me with organizations like Doubleclick.net is how the (alledged) profiling is done without any concent. Although, I personally don't solicit them, organizations like Alladvantage (which pay you to view ad banners) at least compensate you, and it is something you sign up for. Doubleclick.net not only gets payed to show the ad banner, but they also get free consumer information, which is just wrong.
Hmph... so, to finish it off, I applaud organizations like Slashdot who do their own ads, since they are obviously taliored around the page and aren't being used for a large scale marketing project.
And, finally, to the author of this story, please be careful to be as unbiased as possible. While I do think that Doubleclick.net is a spawn of the devil, objective reporting is quite important (the lack of which is why i don't watch TV news anymore).
Just how i see it. =^) -legolas

Well, according to Microsoft's Investor Relations FAQ, i would say March 13th, 1986 (at $21.00/share). Wouldn't it have been nice to know what you know now then? =^) -legolas

There was an element of sarcasm in my original post. I will fully agree that capitalism is a heartless system, where success is gauged by income. However, the United States has always been a large pusher of capitalism in the world ("saving" some eastern european countries from the red scare after WWII and finally bringing capitalism to the former USSR.) I was just saying, for a country that has a history of opposing communism/socialism (eg McCarthyism), it is funny how quicky people want the Government to crucify a company who, by the standards of Capitalism, is doing everything right. I don't nessicarily agree with it (Eg, in Canada, monopolies like phone companies/cable companies/power companies/etc. have to go though a review board to change their rates and such, and i like it like that)... i was just being philosophical/difficult =^) -legolas

Nar... the best way for the government to keep control of these companies is to run them theirselves. And, if the government runs the entire economy, nobody's toes will be stepped on. Wait... this sounds familiar... =^) -legolas

Eventually, like the little spoiled kid... Hmph... I hate to interject, but I'm not sure if this analogy is exactly fair. Unlike the "spoiled kid", Microsoft wasn't handed their large empire. Now, I do agree that Microsoft's business practices are questionable (remembering when IE first came out)... but don't forget that they had to fight to get where they are. In a country that is so passionate about Capitalism and has a history of being against Communism (read: government controlled economies), it's interesting how quickly people want the Government to step in and stop this overwelming Capitalistic success.

Hee... you mean "your" legal system. Remember... some of us aren't from the USA... which makes this even scarier (when you see a teen in Norway getting arressed for alledgedly breaking US copyright law). It's good to see that sovergnty doesn't exist online.;^) -legolas

I'm working in cross-platform programming, and our company chose to go with Apple (we each have an iBook and we have some iMacs). At first, I was skeptical about it. However, after some use (and putting LinuxPPC on it), I don't really want anything else (except for more mouse buttons). We've also got a PIII 500, and in comparison, the iBook is pretty speedy, considering it's a laptop (for only $2500 CDN, which is a deal). I wrote Apple off in the past, but if they can get MacOS X together (since the hardware is willing, but MacOS is still weak... i mean, whenever anything on the network goes for DHCP, or anything on Firewall reboots, the iMacs freezes for a few seconds and skips our playing CD;^), I would be willing to abandon Intel entirely. Just how I see it. =^) (and this is my first post).
