  1. Re:Flooding Napster with bad versions of songs? on Ask Metallica About Napster · · Score: 1

Speaking of altered songs, I tried to inject an anti-Metallica message into the net yesterday. I recorded a warning about Metallica and a plea to boycott them. I then named this mp3 "Metallica - The Unforgiven (Rare Mix).mp3" and "Metallica - Kamakazi.mp3". I hoped these titles would be appealing to Metallica users. Alas, over a 24 hour period nobody took the bait. It could be that users were smart enough to see that they were only 380K, or that the titles were not appealing enough. Another possibility is that people have stopped downloading Metallica songs. I wonder if there are other ways to test this third possibility.

Newsflash - In a bizzare plan to increase records sales, Metallica plans to cash in on the ever-increasing prison population market by suing college students across America, a move that they hope will appeal to prisoners nation wide since it is well known that criminals hate the g-damned hippie college student elite. With prisons being incresingly run by corporations, Metallica hopes to get a CD kiosk in every prison across America, sharing profits with the prison. Metallica also plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to the McGruff the crime dog campaign. Says a Metallica spokesperson "When I was in prison I would have done anything for a Metallica CD, you wouldn't believe what I had to do to get a Judas Priest CD. I believe this market is ripe for exploitation, and believe me no one hated college students more than I did". Critics respond that Metallic is likely to the first rock band to win the Darwin Award.

I assume that Metallica will cull through their 335K list and look for users of Napster at their place of work. It is easy enough to record a download session into a logfile and then use this log as evidence in court, of course verifying that it was in fact a valid Metallica song. Can you imagine the money they could make by suing a user of Napster that did the deed at work, at Microsoft, Sun, etc... They will sue the user and the company. Whee!

Your argument sounds sensible but actually if 99% of the actual use of that particular brand of crowbar were to commit a crime because it was very well suited for it, then I think you would have a case against the crowbar manufacturer. Another example is radar dectectors. They are used almost exclusively to allow the user to break the speed limit while minimizing the chance of getting caught. Several states have made the use of radar detectors illegal. I can't back up my figures, but I am guessing that more than 99% of the time, Napster is being used to commit a copyright violation.

This wouldn't work because users would quickly figure out which people had shared libraries of unblemished songs.
