    I think this is 'a bad thing'.
    I don't think standards like this scale well.
    What would happen if someone said
    "Let's add 2 new data pins to RS232"?

    I live in a country where we want 3 extra symbols to accomodate the language. They're all in Latin-1, of course. I don't even think that expanding to 8-bit Latin-1 is necessarily a good thing, let alone introducing an entirely new character encoding (16-bit) to the scheme of things.

    We don't let Russian trains into central Europe (the tracks are wider), why should be let Kanji into our character sets. (Yes, I know Russian trains do come to Europe, I live at the end of one of the lines, just not central europe!)

    Anyway, here's to 3-bit serial lines...
    (Could I patent that? I'd need to design an IC of flip-flap-flup-flipflop-catflap-flatcap-fatcat-flo ps first...)

    The large empires were fairly economically advanced in biblical times. Payment of taxes to the emperor, being the most simple example of (exploitative) mechanisms that were in place.

    However, the God at that time _was_ the emperor.
    And the God in this day and age is simply an anachronistic metaphor.

    So whatever biblical quotes you come up with can't change the fact that property is not a god given right.

    What's an unnatural radioactivity then?

    Has the canton Geneva is in given women the vote yet?
    (It's a republic where the different Cantons have their own internal political systems, which includes deciding whether the female of the species can have the vote.)
    So not everyone is lucky to live in Switzerland...

    The Americans fall for this more than the Europeans do.
    AMD sales in Europe have been increasing _hugely_ over tha last year or so. Intels have stayed nearly flat. And given that the whole market has grown, "flat" means "down"...

    Two points
    1) If the attack is coming from _within_ an ISP, all bets are off.
    2) How many people/corperations are there who do have 45Mb/s access? The last 2 fortune 500 IT companies (one 100, one 100-200) I worked for had 2Mb/s.
    Surely that must narrow the attacker down somewhat.

    I can't believe that ISPs are happy to _carry_ the attack. Why can't the ISPs be made responsible for the DoSs that they carry, maybe then they'd help trace them to their source as they pointed the fickle finger of blame further up the pipe.

    OK, but music is surrounded with RIAA restrictions, software might (I don't know) be completely different.
    Is there anyone out there who knows whether it would be legal or not.

    If it would be then the exercise, for those so inclined, simply remains to work out how to abuse this protocol, and carelessly implement it in order to get back to where we are now.

    However, it would be nice for at least everyone to start with a legal sanction.

    Yes. You are spot on.
    Simply make sure that you bounce it with a 550 or whatever, and then any real human beings will see why they can't get things to you. And spammers end up with loads of 550s in their in-boxes. Tough doodoos for them.

    What happened to the blacklist of 'spammer' domains that was constantly kept up to date.
    (With its oh so memorable FLA name!)

    My "ISP" has the following 550 messages waiting for you if you connect to its SMTP port from the wrong location

    550 We do not accpet mail from Yahoo.com a known spammer domain.

    Anyone with their own SMTP port can implement this.

    Then the user e-mails proof to x, who promptly provides the backup?

    Would that be legal?

    You'll find it hard to find anyone who doesn't reply to that question (best Linux for clustering) with their current flavour of the month home Linux. We're too damn partisan.

    I've used 4 distributions in the last 2 years. I only use Linux, at the moment I however rank them by which is least sucky.

    My intention is to have my N machines properly clustered, so I read this thread with excitement. However, if the conclusions are XxxXxx or XxXX, then I'll give up right away.

    OK, it's obtuse, but I have to...

    My youngest child loves milkshakes, when given one at MacDonalds she turns a veritable slurper cum guzzler, which invariably leads to those 'ice' headaches and typically quite a mess too.

    I always read replies (even the -1 ACs which are simply swearing at me).
    I will admit that I found all the +2s a bit perturbing. It's remarkable how many idiots have reached the automatic +2 level.
    That's why I try to post at +1. It's not my job to moderate myself up. However, sometimes I get hasty and I forget to check the box.
    And sometimes I get a bit hasty and I just post a rant. Hell, I take -ve moderation on the chin if I deserve it!

    Now we really are off-topic!

    It's similar to the Napster philosophy - "sharing is good as long as I get more than I give" type thing.
    I hobby-code in a fairly competative field. We're all cooperative, but I only like to distribute version x of my code after I've started using version x+1, which is faster/better of course. Share - but only so much.

    Their solution is to say
    "we do not directly support linux, and therefore will not supply drivers for it; however have out interface spec - feel free to write your own (modulo NDA)."

    Personally I don't need the source code, and I don't care who compiled the executable. Only two things matter - does it seem to work and when it appears it doesn't is there someone interested in fixing it.
    If I had to tweak the source code myself, I'd be prepared to sign an NDA. There's nothing immoral about NDAs you know.

    Don't be fooled, it's the feather and the stone...
    In space, it matters little what your size is, as there's bugger all drag (which is proportional to area facing the flow).

    However, the issue of how far they can wind forward a >2 body problem is pertinent.
    I guess if they're giving probabilities, they must have worked out some kind of a bell-curve, a probability map of where it could be in space. We just have to assume that the perturbation theorists have given the prediction the thumbs up.
