A company called extended systems makes serial and usb ir dongles that depending on your os may allow data transfer up to 4 mbit if you can use usb, 115K if you use serial.You should be able to get 2 of them for about $50-100 total for both.Thats of course if the computers are close enough together. I know there is support for most of the M$ operating systems, but Im not sure about the level of support for infrared in linux
