Thats completely true. I have been also a part of a project that was started to implement AIinto the OS in different levels. Unfortunately the project was cancelled after a year because most people thought it was too big to be collaborated through the net. Anyway, If we could of AI for a system, not in the web, then yes ! UI's do need an intelligent way to track users' interactions.

AI in a desktop UI !? seriously now.. All the problems you have talked about are addressed one way or the other in different GUIs in Linux. I dont have a problem with WindowMaker ! Anyway, we're talking here about AI .. not UI. And I do feel, if I'm not mistaken, that the web needs some AI, as its quite filled with crap everywhere and navigating through this gets to someone's nerve every now and then.

I think this would be a great idea. And there is a lot of AI element in that. Crawling the net for news alone if not enough, but you need the algorithm to filter out all the redundancies in news pieces which talk about the same subject and present them as a thread like interface to the reader. This way, a user can, for example, tag the news item which talks about the Microsoft trial. and after a week, he can log back in and review a thread which has been customized for him and which tracks all the events that talk about the trial.
