What if a better package is available that is not GPL? They do not get a science/physics backing from you? What is more important?

I think this may be true for a small segment of folks, mostly found here on/., but until things like live sports can be delivered in a better medium than cable or sat dish, I do not see it 'dying' for a long time.
I have yet to find any reasonable quality sports delivery on the Internet other than scores, unless you like those tiny, incredibly poor quality, jumpy 'live' broadcasts

News of the demise of TV is somewhat premature
as I recall Hamburg has an automated port system that handles containers in an entirely automated fashion. loading, offloading, storage etc
after that it is just a matter of scale
perhaps they should have talked to the Hambug folks, who seemed to have got it right.
