I wish everyone would get over the hacker/cracker definition thing. Language changes, it is dynamic. That's one of the cool things about English is that it is very adaptable. Gay used to mean happy. Even if you could convince everyone you know of the difference, once the media has gotten ahold of something you're fighting a juggernaught. Besides, do the people who don't know the difference REALLY matter?
McPhail in _The Myth of the Madding Crowd (Social Institutions and Social Change)_ confronts this notion of the crowd acting in a herd-like mentality much like that of cows or sheep and shows that it is an error caused by incomplete understanding of crowd dynamics. If this Yale expert really knew what he was talking about he'd have read the research and known that the herd mentality theory of crowds has been dead for years. If he's wrong about that what other B.S. is he cranking out.
