Sun is always saying crazy things, and then always changing their mind.
Wasn't it sun that said that hardware would be free, and only hardware would be sold? I can not even keep track of the times that sun has changed their position on: x86, Linux, and GPL.
I don't think any of the other major tech companies are like this.
> Didn't these folks come out swinging against Linux and OSS development long ago and far away?
Not only did sun come out swinging, they were a major financer of the scox scam. Sun has flip-flopped on linux more times than I can remember: first they love linux, then they hate linux, then they say that linux is only good for desktops, then they say that only sun can legally distribute linux, then they say that linux is java.
> Look, man, I'm glad they've "finally seen the light" and opened up their stuff (still CDDL for most of the code though, right?) but they've done it when it was convenient and when they've got something to gain now, not because it was the right thing to do.
That's sun for 'ya. They are as scitzo as any company can be. They were equally scitzo about the x86 architecture. Now they are scitzo about the GPL.
>>Just because their work does not percolate down to the products and services teams at MS
So msft spends gobs of money, hiring huge numbers of researchers to do all kinds of research. Msft invents all kinds of stuff. Then msft just throws all of that away, and steals ideas from other companies?
Instead of telling us how many PhDs msft has on their payroll, why not tell us what msft has actually invented? What major contributions to computer scientce has msft actually made?
Msft is giving corporations yet one more reason not to use Linux. Msft is saying that Linux is a legal mine-field. This is the reason that msft funded the scox scam. Now that the scox scam is winding down, msft needs a new company to keep the scam working.
I switched from the yahoo search engine to google a long time ago. Then I switched from yahoo finance message boards to investorvillage, after yahoo borked their message boards. Just today I found that yahoo borked their maps, which I used to use all the time. Now this.
The constitution may protect the speech, but that doesn't mean the student can say or do whatever he pleases. The school has every right to impose additional rules. And if the student doesn't follow those rules, the school does not have to accept that student.
The school is saying: "you can say whatever you want, but not if you want to be a student here."
Similarly, your job can impose such restrictions. Sure, you have the right to say what you want, but you can also be fired for whatever reason. You and your employer have a deal, part of the deal is that you conduct yourself in appropriate manner.
I hope I don't get kicked off slashdot for posting that, but it's true.
Windows running native is a lot less expensive, and more stable, than any virtualization setup.
Ive use debian for years, and wonderd why
on
Fedora Linux

anybody would use redhat.
IMO: debian still has the best package management in the business. Also, you don't have to download and install a ton of cruft that you don't want. And you only install debian once - then just incrementally upgrade.
adults. At least no studies that I know of, and I have researched the issue.
Switzerland, for example, is very free with porn (what most contries would call porn) yet the rate of rape is very low. And the degree of gender equality is fairly high.
Countries that forbid porn, like some mid-eastern contries, have some of the worst gender equality you will find anywhere.
Anyway, the point is, this fundamentalist Christian notion that porn is damaging to adults is not scientifically proven - far from it.
And for good reason. There is too much of this to even keep with it all. And it's not as if you can do anything.

If you consider those gimmicks "cool" then good for you. But I don't see any bottom line productivity gain.

I'd love some false memories, if I could control what I'm "remembering." While they're at it, could they erase some real memories?

Makes perfect sense to me.

GUI? LAN? internet? What?
Can I be vendor-locked by google? Can google take control of computer technology standards?
If so, then maybe the article has a point.
1) What if you are using redhat?
2) Novell can already distribute 100% legal GPL code, can't they?
3) Why are the terms of the agreement secret?
4) Why should novell be given exclusive rights to a public resource?
As I understand, msft agreed not to sue novell customers for 5 years.
After 5 years: then what?
Is there something in the article you specifically dissagree with? If so what?
If there is something wrong with PJ's arguement, please point it out.
No point is just giving your opinion about PJ.

JMHO.
A long time ago, Gates said the most important thing was to control the standard. This has always been msft's focus. And it has worked like all hell.
If ODF caught on, msft might lose control of the document standard. Nearly msft's worst nightmare. Consider msft's aggressive lobbying in MA.
Seamless access to shared Windows folders and printers
The ability to write to Windows NTFS partitions
Seamless Microsoft Exchange connectivity
Can't I already do that with debian?
At least groklaw claims it's related.

It's all about vendor-lock.
Once you own the market, the trick is to keep it. Msft's DirectX 10 scam is much more beneficial to msft than any silly technical innovation.
I suppose msft's vendor-lock scams are innovative.
Today is the biggest one-day drop since the scam started.
Scox's market cap still 4X as high as when darl started.

To each, his own, I guess.
Cavemen scetched erotic images on the sides of the cave walls.
Erotica is natural and normal to humans. Always has been. It's just the way we're wired.
Some oppresive governments and religous nuts simply confuse cause and effect.
