  1. Re:Compaq Stock Prices on Compaq Names New CEO · · Score: 1

No, the time to buy is *after* the hideous 2nd
quarter results come out on 7/28, operating losses
plus restructuring costs are going to total at
least 700 Million - don't buy before such an announcement. What is Compaq - a seller of crappy
PC's with no support, or an Enterprise Vendor, better figure it out soon - time is wasting.

    >The exact causes of poverty, both of states and or individuals, are an unknown

they are? There is a close connection between:

    1. technology
    2. birth-rate
    3. wealth

so, increase technology and decrease birth-rate
if you want to increase wealth - all other things
like war, disease, and natural disasters being equal.

I believe everybody should have something to eat,
a roof over ones head, and a lack of turmoil (wars, etc.) but this is a hope and a belief. it
has to be created and renewed by consious directed
action, give aways do not help, unless they are tools to help people achieve these things for themselves, on thier own terms, not defined as
'good' or 'proper' by some power. the most potent tool of all is education.

  3. Nothing New on Flat Panel Speakers · · Score: 1

the original 'flat' speakers were developed in the
    1920's !

    The major types are:

    electrostats: Quad (late 50's up)
    Accustat (out of business) 70-80's
    Martin-Logan (80's 90's)
    Sound Labs (70's up)

    planar magnetics:

    Magnepan (70's up)
    Apogee (bass panels)

    Ribbons:

Apogee (looks to be out of business)
    Magnepan tweeter strips

    Ribbons have the best high's
    electrostats have the best mids
magnetic planars have the best low mids/upper bass

none of them really has great bass for whallop
below about 60 Hz. The Martin-Logans are the best
in terms of real world use, most of the models are
integrated with really fine sub-woofers, and are o
often used in high end home theatre set-ups

W (owner or past owner of: Magnepan I, II, 3.4 +
    Martin-Logan Aerius and SL-3)

There is plenty of literature around on these both
    technical and marketing

  4. Martin Logan, Poly-Membrane Speakers.... on Flat Panel Speakers · · Score: 1

you are wrong. ML Aerius go for 2K, SL-3 for
3.4 K (mine), ReQuest + CLS are more. They do not
need 'special amps' they need high current amps
a 1.5 K amps would do very nicely. The wire mesh
    is the 'stator'.

Alpha is the fastest, and will remain so until
at least midway thru 2003, in Q4 99' they will have a 1.2 Gz chip coming out. Gartner Group
just put out a piece detailing all the UNIX/PC
harware plans thru 2003, and Alpha is ahead at
every checkpoint. If YOU want 64 bit that flies NOW, why fart around? Sure DUNIX makes em' more
money, but it costs more too, if they can sell MORE chips because of Linux, believe me they will
Compaq + Dec are HARDWARE outfits with services
NOT software outfits. If I was running an IT shop
or a medium+ internet shop I'd ONLY spend money on
Alpha + Linux + Oracle, everything else be damned.
