I am part owner of a POS software company based in SA. I can very very very strongly recommend buying a package that suits your needs. I have seen a number of guys try write software for their friends restaurant/corner store/etc. It seems like an easy task, but once you get down to the fact that you have to handle every aspect of their current and future business, an unsupported open-source application hardly seems like the way to go.
We release updates and features once a week. Our turn around time on bugs (yes, everyone has bugs) is under 24hrs. No matter what the developers claim, you are not going to get that from an open source package.
Once again, I strongly advocate buying a piece of software that will work for your business!
I'm a die hard firefox user, but firefox doesnt even pass the acid test. Don't complain that "firefox is being alienated" when it doesnt even pass rudimentary web tests
Can the moderators please stop posting reports about SP2 acceptance. We've been bombarded with stories on/. about sp2 acceptance and bugs since sp2 was released. Its windows. Its buggy. and it normally takes long to be accepted. Think about it. Windows XP came out in 2000/2001. Its 5 yrs down the line an people are still taking their switching over from ME/98. Why would we care that sysadmins are taking 6months to install SP2?
1/4 of the worlds population resides in china. Could this not mean that places like America might have to conform to what the majority of the world is losing? maybe is not china who's being isolated....
I live in sunny South Africa, and over here, its cheaper to make a 1000 mile fixed line call, than to call someone sitting next to you on a cell phone, yet EVERYONE has cellphones, AND uses them.
The only thing more expensive than a cellphone call is an international call....
Getting paid for work? What arcane principle is this?
Doesnt everyone just work for free towards the greater good of software

We've been using programmable point of sale keyboards for around 7 years. Why is this suddenly "new and amazing" ???
