  1. Re:Radar Detector on Now Police Can 'See' Through Walls · · Score: 1

Better yet build a box that retransmits the incoming radar signal 180 degrees out of phase. Or maybe just a box that continuously transmits on the frequency of the detectors. The radar units have to listen for very faint echoes from the outgoing pulse. The scream of a transmitter on their band would blow the return into invisibility.

You kinda missed a point. A software natural language processor that response to any voice without training vs. a maybe six output feedback trained device with maybe months or years of training? Get real; you're comparing apples to oranges. If you think they don't spend months training the subjects in the use of the 'prosthetics limbs' you might want to re-read the rat article. The difference with human subjects is they don't use an invasive method to attach the electrodes. Musing about why we can can't do a terrible difficult task when we can do primary research tasks is like wondering why an adult can do all the things they do when a newborn baby can't even roll over. Sheesh!

  3. Re:You could always try lead. on Ask Slashdot: Wooden Chasis and EMF · · Score: 1

Nice try but lead is not a ferro magnetic media. Steel wire cloth (window screen) would work better, be lighter, less toxic. You can cut window screen with kitchen shears and staple it to the inside of the case.

(Yes lead is a conductor, a poor one. Faraday cages are great for weak electric fields but leak magnetic fields unless a magnetic conductor is used to trap that nasty B field)

While your children are not licking the inside of your case the heat from the components in the case will cause vaporous lead and the trace mercury found in all lead to out gas. In and enclosed area like the typical bedroom you could get heavy metal poisoning in a few months of exposure.

Yup, some people use lead as a shield against radioactive particles. So it blocks Superman's x-ray vision. Funny thing is, things like cement, paraffin and water are better shielding per unit weight. It must be some 'other' property besides particle capture cross section that blocks Superman's sight. Otherwise he should not be able to see through a concrete wall.

  4. We do it to our selves. on Networking Companies - Eh on Linux · · Score: 3

Linux users in general don't call for support. Especially slackers like me who are too lazy to E-mail in a bug report. So even though we hack around problems and make stuff work, _we_ never ring the right bells with vendors and PHB's. My experience has been whatever work arounds for the other unixen are there are similar work arounds for linux. We let each other know how to do it but we never spam the ppl who report to the ppl making the _business_ decisions. The moral of the story is call frequently with real issues and you will get a better response from the 'other' minded ones.

  5. Not necessarily. on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

Gag-a-maggot! It seems that information is dangerous. The main weapons used were pipe bombs and shotguns. The ones in the news clips were break action double-barrels. These are not semi-automatic weapons. The facts seem to get overlooked that these kids went to great lengths to prepare to kill people. Then they did.

BTW I do keep a loaded pump action shotgun in my bedroom and live in a very rural area. I have used it more varments in the sheep-pens than on people but on five occations in 15 years I've had to use it to eject ppl from my property. Funny thing is all the ppl I've sent packing didn't leave and acted aggressive until they discovered I was armed.

And yes ppl in the country read /. too!

  6. Scapegoats on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

Hmm seems that guns are your scapegoat. Blame the killers and not the tools. These kids built bombs and killed and maimed many of thier vitims with common household items. Where is your cry to ban propane cylinders and nails. If a person really wants to kill they will find a way. Baseball bats and hockey sticks are deadly weapons too. Check the police blotters to see the number of ppl who's weapon of choice is a pool cue or beer mug. The kids killed ppl. We need to look at the causes not the means.
