Good or bad is a value judgement. Value judgements are morals, morals are religion, and church and state are supposed to be seperate (I was going to write "religion is a load of crap" but I'm feeling nice today.)
Valuing human life is a moral too, but I doubt you'd object to the illegality of murder. While I am averse to legislating morality in general, there are some morals that you have to accept in order to take part in an organized society. The fact is, any time you choose one thing over an other you are making a value judgemnet.
Its a damn good thing the American government makes it so clear how illegal it is. I think they should just hang crackers in the public square, and have us bring out our kids to watch. Then they would truly understand.
I hope you weren't being literal here. While I agree that it should be illegal, there is no need to go to such extreme ends. When the perpatrator is simply attempting to expose a security hole without doing any damage, it'd be nice if judges treated this as a mitigating circumstance should the owner of the compromised system choose to press charges.
Escape speed is a scalar quantity. As long as you aim something above the horizon and launch it fast enough, it will reach some kind of orbit. Of course flatter trajectories will have to be _somewhat_ faster to account for wind resistance. You could have a maglev track that is very long and nearly flat, and launch your vehicles out over the ocean if you wanted to. Definately interesting stuff.
An electrician friend of mine once told me that switches should be wired such that up was on. The rational for this was that should the catch fail, gravity would cause the switch to disengage.
I'm not sure, but I think that the witch (or whatever it was) was messing with their sense of direction and/or the terrain. Remember they followed a creek for a whole day and came back to the same log bridge?
This movie was great. I was literaly on the edge of my seat. The best part about it was that they kept building the suspense through the _whole_ movie. In films like Scream, the bad guy pops out every 5 minutes and you get to let off a little steam. I think this one will be even better when it comes out on video.. it's be more personal.
I agree: This would make a better T.V. mimi-series, although I imagine the acting and/or FX would suffer. Even the audio book took (I think) 6 hours to tell the condensed version. I think maybe four hours of file would do it. Alot of those long descriptions would get compressed into set and costumes that you take in in a couple of seconds.
Two words: Gene Wolfe He writes literature.. it's only disguised as SF
MUST READ, MUST READ NEAL STEPHENSON!

Yes, also read _Snow Crash_, which is funnier, but IMHO less well developed. The only other novel of his that I know about is called _Zodiac_ and is about a guy who cruises around in a rubber boat and makes existance miserable for companies that dump toxins into the watershed. A *very* entertaining read.
Don't forget T service after 12:30am - 1am!!
