They may be keeping two sets of numbers. One that's 'closer to the truth' to pay artists and another to 'upsell themselves' to other services. Plex just recently signed a deal with them for example, now ask yourself how much more valuable to Plex they'd be if they just fudged the numbers showing a much bigger draw on the market and in turn more people installing plex servers, and paying a monthly fee to them.
EA's response generally isn't to "be done" but get more investments and buy up more studios. If Anthem fails, expect Bioware to be shutdown like Bioware Montreal, and as you mentioned Maxis.
But just think of the shitty fuckups that have gone on with EA too. Deadspace 3 despite being a success and profitable, they decided to nuke the entire studio because "it didn't sell enough."
Come on, DICE can make awesome games. Take Pinball Fantasies for example. The problem is clearly EA.
Pinball FX2 and FX3 are far better pinball games if you have that itch and if you buy previous tables, they automatically give you those tables free in the new version. FC5 is a rather poor example, even though the gaming press tried to tank it several times, finally giving up. Kingdom Come: Deliverance would be a far better example. The mainstream gaming sites? Kotaku('gamers want to keep medieval games white!' Polygon(blahblah misogyny, gamers want to keep it white!') Giant Bomb(we refuse to review it!) and so on. A title that was attacked by SJWs for having white characters, not being diverse, rampant complaints of misogyny, was blacklisted by other members of the gaming press, was topic banned in several gaming subreddits to boot. Which went on to sell around 1.5m copies.
It's very easy to sell an established title, on a storefront you already own, with 5ish prior titles to build off of. Far more difficult to go from nobody studio to holy shit this is awesome.
