As an VAX 780 veteran will tell you, FUBAR stands for Failed Unibus Address Register. This was basically a write-only register that, immediately after being written, was put into the dump file generated before the machine successfully rebooted.
Of course, it also comes from the same WWII genesis as SNAFU.
