  1. Re:legitimate linking limitations on Restrictive Linking Policies & The Net · · Score: 1

True, however I was not assuming that:

    a) users are alert
    and
    b) The American Cancer Society (or other organizations prone to misrepresentation) regularly check their logs for direct accesses to deep links.

  2. legitimate linking limitations on Restrictive Linking Policies & The Net · · Score: 1

This article completely ignores the reasons that some sites - such as the American Cancer Society - have restrictive linking policies:

How easy is it to imagine setting up a site that displays "official" information from the American Cancer Society - with a "Donate Now!" button linking to my bank in Bermuda.

No, this will not stop a scammer from trying, but it gives the real site owner slightly more legal leverage to do something about it.

  3. Re:Advice on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 2, Informative

I would generally agree with this advice. I worked as a sysadmin for several years, and am now back in graduate school trying to specialize and get away from it. Why?

value of your skills: Many years ago, being extremely computer literate was an unusual skill. Now it is not.

simple economics: How many 18 year olds can they hire for the salary you require >30?

lifestyle: At 18 I was happy to spend my nights and weekends configuring and testing systems. (Good administrators do not take the systems down during business hours.) As I get older, this gets less appealing.

upgrade path: What is the "step-up" from sysadmin? Do you still want to be a sysadmin when you are >50?

the job: Sysadmins are associated with their failures rather than their successes. You may perform the most amazing technical feats, but you only get noticed when something fails.

I understand your interest in the technology; I love it myself. In general I liked my sysadmin jobs, but there are some significant drawbacks to consider.

I personally decided to get out to save my mental health.

  4. Re:This is not a new problem. on What Will Happen to Rented Software When Its Publisher Sinks? · · Score: 1
There was an old saying that "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM."

The point being that "average" IS managers will lean not toward the best/most cost-effective vendor, but the least controversial one.

If software rental becomes the norm, and vendor survival becomes the only test, then choosing unstable software from a stable company will be the standard business decision.

Remember that the few who know much do not set the standards. Standards are set by the many who know little.

  5. Did Gore lose faith in technology? on Analysis: Reforming Political Technology · · Score: 1

I was personally disappointed in Gore's sudden lack of trust in technology. Gore has a long history of supporting the development and use of technology, (to say nothing of the Internet) and suddenly his campaign decides that the counting machines are not accurate enough. We need to count them manually to be fair?

I cannot comment on the accuracy rate of hanging chads and mechanical punch card readers, but at least we can be certain that their counts are not politically motivated. Does Gore honestly expect the same unbiased count from election volunteers?

To the contrary, he is positively depending on their bias.
