  1. Already moving forward on IBM About To Buy Sun For $7 Billion · · Score: 3, Informative

Our Sun sales rep has already reported that 75% of the sales force has been let go - which may not be a bad thing... Sun couldn't sell/market themselves out of a wet paper bag.

I have the utmost respect for a large part of their technology portfolio... and they really do (or at least seem to) try hard, but in the last 5 years support, sales, and things in general with them have just degraded.

  2. Re:EMC Symmetrix or Clarion, just do it... on Best Server Storage Setup? · · Score: 1

"..you'll thank yourself later." ... or kick yourself later. Don't get me wrong, EMC has certainly made some pretty deep inroads into the SAN marketplace, but they
are also working off of technology/ideas/designs that were developed years ago. And while I'm all for tried and true and tested "stuff", I think there are newer, cheaper, better solutions out there. Just because EMC is easy to say, and Dell sells it, doesn't make it right. *grin*

We've had some problems with the EMCs that we have at my workplace - lacking performance, oversold features, limited expandability (which should be expected from the clariion line). Some of this could be alleviated by going the Symmetrix route, but that's a whole lot of coin for what it is, and if you don't need mainframe connectivity, it's just silly. So for one of our latest purchases we tried 3par - http://www.3pardata.com./ They provided more for less, are great to work with, have excellent support, and push some serious throughput. There are some very big institutions letting 3par into their datacenters... and then asking for more.

If you really need petabytes of data, and actually want it available, manageable, and accessible - Look at a disk vendor (something like 3par), don't build it yourself or buy it from Dell.

  3. Don't reinvent the wheel on Kerberos 5, LDAP, and Time-of-Day Constraints? · · Score: 1

Everything that you are trying to do has been done already. I'm sure you have some *reasons* for not using Active Directory, but I'm not sure that they are the right reasons. Personally, I'm not a big fan of MS products, but AD *is* slick, and does its job when configured correctly (just like most things). There are even tools out there to get your *nix boxes to work with AD (I use Vintela Authentication Services at my workplace, but there are others) - they aren't that expensive, and they don't require a lot of engineering and administration like some free "solutions" do.

If you have Windows system in your environment, you really want them to run well and not have problems... because fixing design or compatibility problems on that platform can be a real pain. Where as *nix systems can be tinkered with more easily (and *nix admins are more prone to tinker). So picking something like AD ensures that the troublesome side of the house stays quite and the flexible side of the house can adapt.

As far as the lawsuit goes, im sure the motivation behind the cutbacks wasnt to destroy themselves and provide bad service. I somehow doubt that USW is in a plot to make themselves the worst company they can. If you have more information on that lawsuit i would love to see it.

  6. Sheesh! and Good + Bad on US West/Qwest Merger Gets Federal Thumbs-Up · · Score: 1

Sure, its real easy to remember and preach about all of the bad things that U S WEST has done because its the bad things that stick out in your head. What about all of the thousands of days that you picked up your phone and you had dial-tone or recieved yet another email at your uswest.net email account?

Granted, there are some times that USW had really fscked up but everybody has to fsck every once and a while (at least once every 20 mounts :) And the times when they are really needed, like during all of the fires that have been raging lately or during some of those wonderful midwestern storms, you always seem to have DT or inet access.

And its not uper management or even management that screws things up or gives a directive to screw the customer. Its all of those old bell heads that are used to telling people "ill get to you when i feel like it, and if i dont youre out of luck". Management of any level wants the business to succeed, that is why they are there and the only way to get business to succeed is to make the customer happy. And guess what, its easy to make the customer happy if they arent already pissed off. So dont start off your call to USW/Q with "You MFers F'ed up my dsl connection again. you had better F'in fix it or ill go to X provider" Of course they arent going to be "happy" to help you cause you just came off looking like an Ahole.

I say again, U S WEST has screwed up their fair share of times. Even though I work for USW i still have problems getting things done or circuits ordered for my division. They ARE trying to change things and this deal may be just the thing to help out. With Qwests HUGE backbone and U S WESTs local networks and (v)dsl things could be really sweet.
