Although I agree with your sentiment, I think you'll find that people have different thresholds for 'style over substance'. Your examples prove my point: I _don't_ own a lava lamp, I am married but I _don't_ wear a ring, and I have shaved my hair precisely because it serves no purpose (other than keeping my head warm, but that isn't usually an issue).
