  1. Re:the source of the fucking on VA Layoff Rumors · · Score: 1

Unless you have a vested interest in VA, I wouldn't worry about sourceforge. Open source will survive with or without sourceforge. My own company, for instance, is planning to release OPP 0.3 (when completed) using our own open source 'distributed collaborative development environment'. That notwithstanding, I believe that most of the underlying sourceforge software is itself opensource; so it shouldn't be too difficult to duplicate.

Not that it matters this long after the discussion started, but OS/390 is actually an operating system that runs on the S/390 mainframe. Linux is another operating system that also runs on the S/390 mainframe.

    Just doing my pedantic part.

These sort of rifts have been happening in open source since the dawn of time when it was called free software. I think it's a healthy part of normal development. Without dissension, there is no innovation.

Wouldn't cloning be covered by the same fundamental right to privacy that the court created out of thin air in their ruling in Roe v. Wade? Of course: I Am Not A Lawyer, or an abortion rights activist (one way or the other), or a cloning activist, or a sheep.

  5. Taxable? on Ford Giving Free PCs to All Employees · · Score: 2
I wonder how the IRS views this program.

The PC's are apparently owned by PeoplePC, and not by either HP or their workers. However, HP pays part of the standard lease rate for any of their employees who participate. Is this subsidy considered taxable income for the worker?

Nevertheless, I think it's a good idea. Five years ago, I was able to get a high-end new computer because my employer provided interest free loans for computer purchases. Of course, when I left for a higher paying job, I had to pay the entire remaining balance in one lump sum; but it's better than losing the whole computer with all my personal files.
