It's similar to the way private control has completely fucked up the US healthcare system.
<sarcasm>Fortunately, the ACA has made great strides in fixing what's wrong with US healthcare.</sarcasm>
My wife's medications that used to cost $5 now cost $60. A bunch of people who had exactly the health insurance that met their needs saw it canceled, and are forced to buy stuff they don't want. I would say "thanks Obama" but it's more like "thanks Democrats" since the ACA disaster was passed on a 100% partisan basis. And the worst is still yet to come with the ACA rollout, as the president has been (illegally) delaying its most draconian provisions -- to translate into plain English, a bunch of people will lose their jobs as business are forced to tighten their belts. So getting back to the topic at hand -- no, the government is not likely to improve things.
OK, if he/she is personally harmed by Jihadists, I will dutifully apologize for mis-predicting. Statistically speaking, I think I'm in pretty good shape, though. Certainly the OP needs to chill and stop freaking out because some people disagree with them. (Ice cream is a recommended way to do that, hence my suggestion.)
So apparently simply disagreeing with you is threatening to destroy your way of life?
I think somebody really needs an ice cream cone, a hug, time with a puppy, etc. It's not that bad, buddy. Even the Jihadists are really not likely ever to personally cause you harm. A little perspective here?
How do you tell a compelling story about IT infrastructure?
Once upon a time, there was a filing cabinet. This was no ordinary filing cabinet, for it sat beside a large server rack, and every day it gazed longingly at the shiny, blinking machines and wondered what it was like to be in the cloud storage business.
So a ready answer exists to any question I can think of, but I don't seek answers, and I am old. Wow! That is one of the lamest (and weirdest) Slashdot insults I've gotten in a while.
"If you don't cut your pinkie finger off, I'll cut off your whole hand!"
Cutting off the pinkie only seems like a bargain if you take seriously the larger threat. If the larger threat is (I'm sure I'm the first to use this pun...) a lot of hot air, then you are wisest to keep your pinkie and be happy. Again, I'm with Richard Lindzen on this -- until and unless the alarmists come up with something more convincing than "the computer climate simulation of the week".
Care to share links to some serious reviews "written by the skeptical contingent of climate scientists"? (An honest request, I'm not trying to imply there are none...).
It's pretty soon yet, since the "sky is falling" report was released just this morning(?), but I'm sure if you keep on eye on http://judithcurry.com/ you'll find a response. She seems to enjoy blogging about her field, and isn't afraid to tell the boys when she disagrees with them.
Not critically reviewed, just sort of repeated and summarized. I am pretty sure Phil Plait is not a climate scientist. For a much more interesting review, read those written by the skeptical contingent of climate scientists.
Yes, lead was worth raising the alarm about. But there have also been alarmists at various points in history who claimed that the sky was falling without adequate evidence, who are quickly and justifiably forgotten when their grandstanding comes to an end. I'm with Richard Lindzen on this one -- first prove the sensational climate carbon sensitivity claims, and then let's talk about crippling our economy to attempt to control the climate.
I didn't say there was a magic number. I said there was a competition. And the way to win that competition is by paying your guys/gals more, not by secretly breaking the law.
I have an amazing, original idea for retaining talent. Ready for this?........ Pay them a competitive salary.
I'm pretty sure Apple do pay their engineers well.
Depends on whom you ask. My own understanding is that Apple has a culture of demanding utter company devotion and secrecy from their employees, but does not have a reputation of paying the highest engineering salaries. I don't work in Apple HR nor am I an Apple employee, so it's just hearsay.
But whatever you pay them, there will always be another company that will come along and pay a bit more.
That's why I said "a competitive salary". If somebody else is willing to pay a bit more, then your salary is not competitive (at least, not successfully).
Sorry, the timing of Dr. Carson's audit was not a coincidence. He was targeted because of his political speech immediately after embarrassing President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast.
In my opinion, there should be a clear paper trail at the IRS establishing exactly how all audit decisions are made, and where/why they originated. If it originated from the Oval Office, that information should be available on demand by the auditee, and it should be a felony to conceal it. Obama's IRS has really been going to town with auditing his political opponents, and Bill Clinton's IRS allegedly actually admitted at one point that an audit was being done for payback against a person suing the president.
When the IRS is used as a political tool (or really, weapon), people's confidence in our country's freedoms is justifiably eroded. I'd like to see laws, harsh penalties and (again) paper trails brought to bear on this problem.
that the best programmers/software engineers are astoundingly more productive; something like 10 to 25 times faster then average ones. He obviously wanted to do what it took to retain them, since he was knew that his new product developments relied on impossibly fast deadlines.
I have an amazing, original idea for retaining talent. Ready for this?........ Pay them a competitive salary.
Nice troll. How are ammunition or porn sales "fraudster industries"? People do get what they pay for, it's just that the government (yes, the nanny state) doesn't approve. Back in your troll hole now. Scoot!
Maybe that's part of it. I think this is Big Government nanny state in action. They want to control everything they see, whether or not there's a law authorizing them to do so. It's this kind of arrogance that makes the IRS audit political opponents of the Obama administration for no other reason than to intimidate them and "make them go away". Making people go away in one form or another is a common theme with dysfunctional governments.
...but I can't stand the thought of government deciding that some people (who aren't doing anything illegal) shouldn't be able to have a bank account.
I reject the excuse that it's all optional on the part of the banks. Having Big Brother breathing down your neck and Strongly Suggesting that you do something is absolutely inappropriate, and I'd love to see Washington, DC held accountable for this in some way.
Ask yourself: is there anything wrong with Mann's "my way or the highway" attitude toward publishing in his niche area of research in Science Magazine? How can you possibly describe this as anything other than "cargo cult science"? To quote Mann's supervisor at the University of Virginia, to a Science Magazine editor, "Excuse me while I puke".
Maybe I just don't know how to work this stuff, but I wasn't aware you were replying since you're doing it as AC. I get notifications when a replier is logged in, so you might consider logging in if you want to continue the exchange.
Sorry, which investigations found that no emails were deleted? Please provide the reference, along with the convincing evidence that no emails were deleted. It was my understanding that there was no way to know the answer to that, and that in at least one investigation the investigators deliberately avoided asking if emails were deleted because they didn't want anybody to admit to a potential crime. (To anybody paying attention, the investigations were for the most part an exercise in "friends helping friends out," and not particularly interested in stirring any pot that might turn up scandal and academic disgrace.)
I'm guessing the evidence that no emails were deleted consists of... what... not finding any deleted emails? LOL! Stick around and I'll explain the concept of "deleting" to you.
I weep for you, O Anonymous Coward, at being forced to spend your limited time in conversation with people you regard as stupid. By all means, go away and stop posting on this thread, if that's the way you feel.
The place where they were deleted was from the inbox.
(2) Did you ever get the other side of the story
Yes.
(3) Smears the the fallback for not being able to make an academic argument.
Not sure what you're talking about here. Are you talking about your own smears you made earlier, when you used the phrases "kindergarten level thinking" and "absurdly stupid"? I can't see a good reason to smear the likes of Richard Lindzen and Steve McIntyre with such words. So why are you engaging in such smearing tactics, microbox?

How's that, OK for a start?
let's talk about crippling our economy to attempt to control the climate.
Yeah, let's talk about alarmism.
Sure, what did you have in mind?
...aaaaand Professor Curry doesn't disappoint. She has a scathing write-up on her blog right now for anyone curious.
