Huh??? This is physical...I'm not talking about borrowing...I'm talking about distributing...if your mom gives you her cooking pot, she can't use it...but if you copy a video of a show, you can both watch it...

If I could borrow a CD why would I buy my own (although lots of people do...)

Yea, of course noone listens to MP3s ripped from this CD do they?

If I could borrow a vhs tape of my friends taping of Altons Browns latest diatribe on protiens and salt, why would I watch the show? But I would watch the show and I would buy the DVD if it was good programming!!

Well, there is some advantage to watching new shows...because if it's very popular, everyone's gonna be talking about it tommorrow...

But I think the widespread distribution of ripped DVDs and Telecined/Telesynced first-run movies tells you this answer...

And why would you buy DVDs? Well, extra features, higher quality, and no commercials for a start...

TiVo has been very good to the hacking community...they have supported efforts to add broadband functionality (including adding support to new software revisions), recompile of kernels, ftp and http support, extra harddrive, etc...

But the reason why they have been hesitant to support the reading (and backup) of the recorded video is that they are concerned with implications of distribution. The first and most obvious reason is that if someone can distribute commercial free recordings of TV shows recorded directly from a TiVo it could be argued that it is helping to facilitate piracy. The other reason would be that it would hurt sales...if you can get new episodes from your TiVo owning friend, why buy a TiVo???

As such, most respectable members of the hacking community will not encourage this hack...which is really a testament to the advantages of a company working with the hacking community.

The truth is, NASA isn't going to be in any hurry to get the shuttle back up there. If the shuttle program does continue, they have to be damned sure it never happens again...not for a long time to come...

Don't forget, NASA is funded directly by public opinion and to be honest, if this was indeed an oversight...they will have to earn the confidence of the public again.

This doesn't even include the Senate hearings that are bound to happen...

I think it's been mentioned before...there is a Soyuz space capsule constantly docked with the ISS (to serve as an "emergency escape vehicle" ... replaced every 6 months).

So, the immediate assumption is that they will probably "Moth-Ball" the ISS...as far as I know, all of the systems on board can be operated from ground control...

The Russians might be able to use their next Soyuz flight (scheduled for some time in 2005 I think) to do maintenence on the station...That having been said, I think we have ~6 months before the ISS would have to be temorarily abandoned.

Now, realising that if they used the escape capsule, they couldn't really go back up there without having another "lifeboat", we would have to wait for the Russians to finish another capsule for the "lifeboat"...

Considering all this, I'm going to guess that the shuttle program will be out of commission for at least 3 years this time.

And...considering the current political climate, economics, war, etc...I'm sad to say that I don't think it will fly for a long time to come (if ever again).

As for what will likely happen to the ISS...the Russians will probably operate the ISS with the Soyuz space capsules for the time being.

As for who would want to see ads? Well, lets see...some ppl want to catch previews of new movies (if you don't like or look forward to any movies, you wouldn't understand this one)...as for the other ones...Super Bowl commercials (as with all good commercials) tend to be funny, over the top, and above all entertaining (noone is going to buy your products if your commercial makes them bored)...

The best Super Bowl commercials tend to revolve around animals (Sierra Mist) or celebrities (Pepsi Twist) or are way over the top like the Monster.com commercial with the driverless truck.

The Super Bowl also gives you a window into american culture. The pre-game show and all of the fanfare...lately the patriotic thing has been emphasized...the ads give you an idea what companies are going to be spending money on (dot-coms, new movies, cellular, etc)...the half-time show and post-game show is a generally good judge of how the music industry is doing...this year all of the entertainment was older musicians (No Doubt, Sting, Bon Jovi, etc...).

Mod_GZIP alone can give up to 12x the speed on a purely text page.

The other features (Built-In TTS, Access to multiple search engines, etc) are all fairly standard in the browser market now.

I refuse to belive that this kid could do the work of 20 coders over a 2 year period...
