Do you remember when he passed and there was this guy making nasty comments about him, basically saying that he was happy that he had died? There were so many outraged people that day. I remember reading a response from Tom Christiansen, who knew Rich very well, who basically wrote a moving comment and stated that he was ashamed about what he was reading.
It was interesting to watch the responses from the multitudes of people who, although they didn't know Rich personally, respected his talents and book writing skills. I myself have learned quite a bit about Unix and Networking from Rich and feel ever indebted.
And where was it implied that they were? You were reading what you wanted to into his words.
Perhaps. Perhaps not. I've found that people who place an exaggerated sense of pride in belonging to the "digerati", do so for a couple of reasons:
1) To attain a sense of self worth
2) To compensate for feelings of inadequacy in the non-digital sphere
Digital hubris and Nationalism are abhorent to me. I see too much of it here in Slashdot. The original poster's ludicrous assertion smacked of both and I spoke about it. Sue me.
I was not rude. I was astounded by the Fin's needless posturing. Nationalistic pissing contests bore me.
I'm not particularly interested in who has superior banking. I've never been one to want for lack of need. I'm more interested in the thought processes that go on in one's head to come up with such flagrantly false statements.
DeCSS advances the cause of Freedom. i suspect that Johansen will be remembered far longer than either Linux or Knuth.
When school children learn of the first person who fought against the opressive corporate machines before they evolved into nationless war machines, they will be stufying Johansen.
the definition of a 'web bug' is something that is stored on a different site then the page in question.
Says who? Some so-called "expert". First of all, the term "web bug" is stupid. Anything that allows tracking is suspect in my book. I don't care what server it happens on. All I care is who adminsters the server and what they do with the data.
if I was managing/., that would be the smartest way to keep a webcounter. A totally controlled variable that can be easily grepped out of the logs.
That's your opinion. I disagree.
And look, I managed to make a coherent argument without resorting to name-calling. You still have yet to do that. Sod off.
Too tough for you in here? There are other, nicer forums for you.
Malda has admitted that those "web bugs" are there at Andover's behest. I bet the slashdot crew isn't even administering tht box. Who the hell knows what the Andover people are doing.
Just because you're a willing lemming, don't assume that the rest of us are. All I want is explanation from slashot. Not some flippant response from Jamie. And certaintly not a response from a 2 bit bum like you.
I don't understand this. Why do you need to count pages based on the image? You have the damn web logs !! Why can't you just analyze the web logs? Your traditional response is lacking.
I'm sure you won't respond to this because you never respond with anything more than your obligatory response.
I hate the term "web bug". Actually, I'm more offended at the people who come up with these stupid terms rather than the potential abuse they bring about.
I propose that we direct our energies to tracking and hunting down people who come up with these terms and sending them to Texas. I'm sure they'll know what to do about them down there.
Before my current job, I worked at a video game store for a few months before committing to a 'real' job. One of the first things I was taught was the Dreamcast equivalent to Control-alt-delete. Push down every button at once and hit start, and you'll reboot the system. We'd need to do that at least once a day with most games.
Uh, you do know that there is no reset button on the Dreamcast, right? The little method you described is the only way to reset the Dreamcast without powering it down and back up again.
You worked at a video game store and you didn't realize this? I'm afraid to find out where you're working now.
We'd need to do that at least once a day with most games. Every few days, it would crash so hard we'd need to pull the plug.
Based on your little revelation about resetting the Dreamcast, I'd chalk this up to you and your fellow workers being a bunch of idiots. I imagine your knuckles bleed from dragging them while you walk.
Now, not meaning to flame you here really, but you don't understand game development at a big shop.
And you do? All I've seen you do is regurgitate some comments from a "buddy" of yours who is doing PS2 development. Hardly the objective commentary that I would take seriously. Your "buddy" obviously has a stake in seeing the PS2 succeed so I'm not surprised that he would cast a gloomy picture of the Xbox's future.
All I know is if the Xbox comes out with kick ass games, I'm going to get one. I especially love the fact that it does HDTV resolution out the box, which the PS2 doesn't.
I don't care about API's. I don't care about any other developer nonsense. I all care about is games. And I suspect they will be there.
The employee violated a NDA. The employee was a sneaky bastard while violating the NDA. He did it under an assumed username and made posts to several forums. The employee obviously knew that what he was doing was in violation of the NDA.
I suspect this employee has learned a valuable lesson.
and since the internet, upon which Berners-Lee and others collaborated at CERN, was invented by Americans, perhaps they should have only conversed in English.
They're mostly from institutions of higher learning or research labs, like MIT, Berkeley, PARC, Bell-Labs, etc. I found a charter post on the Net.Aviation newsgroup from Andrew Koenig of Bell-Labs who went on to write several books on C and C++. I'm sure we can find other prominent figures.
actually, MB is the abbreviation for Megabytes, so the previous poster's incredulity was understandable. Mb is the correct term to use when referring to Megabits.
Since all Linux-based console OSs have to be released under the GPL
The kernel, if changes were made, would have to be released under the GPL. But if they make all of their own tools, compilers, etc., those are their's to keep. I'm sure all game companies know how to make their own compilers and debuggers.
I have a feeling Ol' Ralphy boy doesn't even know what an operating system is. Please don't make his ISP's choice a political thing.
This is exactly why people hate BSD and other open source products. All this stupid "hey look...he's using it...it must be cool" stuff turns people off. Let its merits speak for itself and the people will come.
These are the same idiots who will install a service pack from Microsoft without doing any lab testing, hence all the software that breaks shortly thereafter the release (Lotus Notes was a recent problem).
Software isn't the problem. Sloppy and unenforced practices are.
If it doesn't impress Carmack, meaning that he doesn't think it's revolutionary and that he won't develop for it, it's a sad statement for Sony. I think the Xbox is going to whup up on the PS2's ass. It's going to be easier to develop for and it offers more avenues for developers to explore.
I agree with John that it is a shame what Sony has done to the Dreamcast with its incessant and unwarranted hype of the PS2. I think Sony will get a taste of its own medicine with the torrential $500 million marketing campaign for the Xbox.
Any way this shakes out, competition is good for us. We'll get cheaper consoles faster and better games. I just hope we don' get into the stupidity that Sony began with locking down developers to one console. EA and Square made a deal with the devil. I hope it doesn't turn around to bite them in the ass. Actually, being a Dreamcast owner, I hope it does.

That's all.
Uh, stupid, I do online banking myself. I understand the principle. It's too bad you didn't understand the point of my post.
You sound like a very boring person.

What, you don't think some people don't get lucky and get to do the very thing they love? Don't be a cynic.

Very interesting stuff here.
Wasn't there an Ask Slashdot recently about a kid wanting to know how to become a computer historian? This is some of the stuff he should be doing.
Slashdot has become swamp grounds for trolls. Quite sad.

so, i guess using that analogy, Steve Jobs has won?
seems Linus has a standard of victory that differs from the rest of us.
Now all we have to do is get law enforcement agencies to repsect the laws. Any chance of that happening? Probably not.

Just what I needed to start my own gaming company! Thanks BSD!
