    From the grip README:

    CDDB notes
    ==========

    I have declined to sign a license agreement with Escient, the company who owns "www.cddb.com" and runs the CDDB server "us.cddb.com". Their license would (among other things) have required me to place advertisements in Grip and restrict you, the user, to use only their databases. I am against this commercial use of the track information submitted by users such as yourself. For this reason, I encourage you to use free servers, such as "freedb.freedb.org".

    Yes it uses external commands (or small scripts) for everything.
    It even records them in a file (smit.script) so that you can take them out of there when you need to.
    SMIT is good, it helps me not to remember all those special AIX flags and commands, now if it wasent for the ODM life whould be good:-)

  3. Re:Pretty Cool; Hopefully some useful ideas on IBM releases JFS to GPL · · Score: 5
    I just downloaded the code and have had a quick look at it. It seems to contain
    • a dump of the AIX/OS2 code (or something close to it) as a reference implementation (also GPL)
    • a first grab at a "kernel patch" (its a tar ball that unpacks over the 2.2.12 tree).
    • directory containing source code for some utilities and something that looks like the implementation under os2 (#include :-) as a reference
    • Not much documentation except for the reference implementation, but then again code is the ultimate technical documentation:-)

    I would say that the only thing missing is something like the README on the web page in Documentation/fs/jfs.txt (hint, hint)

    Joy, JFS is a good fs, during the two years now that I have been working with AIX I have had one fs corruption, and that was fixed when we fastened the SCSI-1 cable

  6. Jod description on The Life of the Sysadmin · · Score: 1

    When my mother (or somebody else with a not so technical background) asks me what I do for a living I usually tell her that I pat computers on the belly so that they are kept happy.
    Thinking the bad thoughts that keep the systems running next week is the picture for those who know something about computers.
    I feel this gives a good picture of sys-administration, the best job there is you do things once, the second time you automate it.

    And no ponytail, cut that of years ago...
