    the section could at least be wiped out with nulls, which is different from compacting.
    Catalogue pages in access are 2k, there's not much overhead in writing 2K to the disk if your going to write a few bytes anyhow.

    I believe thats the difference between GPL and LGPL.

    The point of open formats (apart from the evil commie thing) is that
    1: 20 years from now you'll still be able to access your data.
    2: You can access you data without relying on a third party. (they may start charging for reading content).

    Access re-creates the database when you compact it, it may still pad the database with crap instead of nulls

    You should have to sign it.

    I'm a good, mainly law abiding person, but one day I might accidentally break a law, opps... You see most people trust that if I accidentally broke the law then I'm not really all that bad a person and my own guilt will be punishment enough.

    Things like:
    You get home,
    Unpack the shopping,
    How the Fcsk did that get in there, opps, I don't think I payed for it either...
    That's accidently breaking the law.
    You shouldn't have to sign somthing to say that you won't take good from the shop that you havn't payed for.

    If a few companies hold key patents then they get togeter and agree licensing terms (often free)

    It gives to a stick to trade with, If somone infringes your patent they may well allow you to use one of their patented ides, instead of going through the courts.

    GPL is not free as in free to rip me off it's free as in you must release me.

    If you don't like not being able to restrict the freedom of something that you recorded in OGG then your not repecting OGG and shouldn't be using it.

    OK OGG SFAK is BSD (please rip me off) license, so your free to rip them off if you want to.

    I have a few very off the wall , but potentially important 'inventions' that I would like to patent.
    But I have to keep them non-public.

    They relate to inteligent and self managing systems, which arn't quite pratical for home use at the moment (due to current PC architectures/performance &co.)
    Microsoft may already hold some patents in that area with things like longhorn.

    Like a lot of tech industries do, you could barter with patents.
    Here's the deal,
    Some OSS peeps form a Open Patent group,
    The patents can be used freely for free(GPL) software or freely by a company if they submit patents to the group.

    Everyone else has to pay to use the patents.

    GPL is important here because a company could just ripoff some BSD software that implemented a patented algo.

    Word is even worse, though you can mostly correct the problem by saving the file with a different name.
    try modifying a file a few times and then saving with a different name, the file size will drop!

    Lots of applications have the same fault, e.g. Microsoft Access doesn't appear to memset so you get what ever happens to be kicking around in memory written to emptyness in the database.
    Also Access doesn't clean out deleted data.

    Jeff Minter used to live just around the corner from me(when I was about 5!), I still at the same place, I don't think he does any more (haven't seen him down the pub?)

    Talley is a small town right, out in the countryside , next to the Aldermaston Nuclear establishment (The reactors probably less than a mile from my house, he says radiantly). I should imagine the radiation contributed to the llama fetish.
    well that's my claim to fame.

    I'd like to see a debugger that told me where memory had been allocated/deallocated.

    Things like the last content of an object (if it has been deleted) and where that memory was allocated etc...

    As Linux gets adopted my more Joes, Carole finds that she has more nasy email in her inbox.

    'hmmmm', carole thinks[it doesn't happen that often for carole], 'There are all thease joes complaining that they can't download the film, were loosing money'

    If Carole proves to anal then there's always going to be someone for 'plug the hole', so to speek.

    DRM on MP3's won't happen, there are too many DRM-less MP3 content providors, that arn't with the RIAA(especially on Kazaa).

    Hmm.. Well I think most 'marketing' people think like this (especially when looking at places like China and India).

    Once you've got your foot through the door, the hard selling can commence.

    Linux is gaining profile in India and China(and other places not quite so big), the countries have some very poor regions and the governments are taking up Linux.

    Media companies what the foot through the door, they want US Movie junkies in India and China, they won't ignore the a significant Linux userbase (assuming one develops).

    in the UK[the land of Big brother],

    Either:
    they won't switch the pump on until you number plate has been taken, compaired against a nationwide database of dodgy numberplates etc...

    Eveyone I've ever know to do driveoffs pinches the numberplates from a simila car first.

    Or: you have to hand your card over/pay upfront.

    Not all the time, but quite often.

    Content companies are stupid,
    No there not, content companies are confused at the moment, 'technology' companies are tring to lure them in, this will only work so long as the content companies don't see a problem.
    But the high level of Linux visibility in devloping markets will be a problem for Microsoft (and the content providors).

    Why do porn sites always have a few different formats and usually work find under Linux?
    Probably because the Porn industry has more experiance of delivering Video to the masses than anyone else, they know if they charge for content and you can't access it then you'll be screaming 'blue' murder.

    Porn has always lead the way in high-tech consumer net access (DSL/ADSL, streaming video etc....)

    Sorry about the corny line, I forgot to put my tin-foil hat on today, a pesky mind control ray must have crept in.
