I'm sorry. Maybe I had a little too much coffee that morning. But your comment did come across as somewhat anti-progressive. What difference does it make who gets paid and who doesn't for solving some of the most fascinating (to some) problems mathematical endeavor has yet uncovered. Your comment about ". . . to whom is it worth a million dollars?" should be answered with a resounding HUMANITY!!! Who cares why these "corporations" or "contests" want to promote mathematical research (probably to promote themselves to some sort of constituency). The important thing is that the rolling stone that is science keeps rocking!! (Don't insult my education, that pisses me off =])
Come on people!!!! The minute we start questioning whether we really need to know something is the minute we cast off our Linux boxes and head back for the caves!!! Talk about asinine comments. I thought we figured out a long time ago that scientific (including mathematical) research is justified in and of itself. Sheeesh!!!
