Linux already has good 3D, just get a Nvidia Geforce 256 and their new XFree86 4.0 drivers. I compared how well the Q3demo ran on both Linux and Windows and it ran a whole lot faster on Linux, it was at least 3 times faster. (I ran the Q3demo at 1600x1200 at the 32bit color depth) It (being the Q3demo) actually ran so fast on Linux that I had to set the mouse speed down because it was so fast.
