To quote a friend of mine... Waaaaaaa. Oh no, I can't watch DVDs. I'd rather use my 5-disc player, personally. Can't burn CDs? Oh well. I'm not really in the habit of burning more than 1 or 2 CDs a month anyway. Yeah, DVDs watching on a TiBook is great, but I really do not need it. I've been using OSX since the DP4 release and have been quite at home 'missing' some features. Every 'classic' app I use has not given any problems. I even did some major Premiere work with the Mac OSX release canditate over the weekend without a hitch. What I'm trying to say it... when a company releases a COMPLETELY NEW OS, some things are bound to be missing at first. Was CD burning part of Mac System 1.0? NO! There are even some things that you can't do in later revisions of other OSs. Like Monitor mirroring under Windows NT4 with an AGP and a PCI video card. Under Mac OS 9 and even Mac OS X its a very easy task. If you desire something to be part of Mac OS X, WRITE IT YOURSELF if you don't want to wait for Apple to do it. Get the Dev kit, Project Builder, Interface Builder etc. Write an.app! Sell your creation to Apple! Instead of just crying, FIX IT OR SHUT UP!
I'm wondering if they did any tests with Linux, BSD or Mac OS X Server. Why would the testing lab only test Win2k and Solaris? Don't testing labs usually test EVERYTHING!?
I read it over a year ago and loved it. Actually I bought it for my dad for Xmas, but read a few pages before I wrapped it up. Immediately after giving him his present, I went done to the store where I bought his copy, and bought one for me.
I'm with this guy, Blizzard owns "Diablo". If they don't want anyone else to use that word (and that word alone) for a title of something that is similar (in this case if the story was roughly the same), so be it. They have the title copywritten and reserve the right to contest anyone else using it.
It seems everyone if forgetting that Apple (as with all computer manufacturers)
is a corporation.
Corporations produce products. These products have a design, a look and a
feel. Products solve problems (some problems may be small, but all products
perform a function that solves a problem). The way that these products solve
these problems becomes property of the corporation (that corporation has the
right to give up ownership, however).
If someone makes a car that looks like a Corvette (with a few alterations),
Chevy has the right to stop that corporation from making that product.
When it comes to computer hardware and software, corporations still must do
what corporations do. Adobe Software has its own look. If Corel were to make
its applications look like Adobe's (pallettes etc), Adobe has the right to stop
them.
The same goes with GUIs. Aqua solves the problem of displaying information
to a user on a monitor. Therefore Aqua is a product bundled with Mac OS X. If
another corporation takes the look of Aqua and puts it on top of another OS,
Apple has the right to stop them or help them. If Apple chooses to stop them,
I support Apple.
You are missing the point. Wireless was around before Apple used it, BUT, no other company made it much of a household word. Yes, Sun has NCs, but once again, Average Joe User Never knew it could be done until Apple made it one of their standards for new machines. USB, I am claiming USB to be one of Apple's "Across the board" Technologies. Every Machine has it, and every machine can use it. I say it this way, because Windows NT out of the Box cannot use USB.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN NOW?
Boys, boys... settle down a bit. All I can add is... who made Gigabit Ethernet a standard first, who made USB a standard first (and it actually works unlike NT), Wireless networking, Multiple Monitor support (easily set up), IEEE 1394, Netboot, Network Assistant -the best computer remote control software I ever seen, what company coined the phrase PDA, etc. etc. etc. Apple. nuf said.
I support over 200 Macs on a daily basis. 50 of them are G3's and G4's. They have given me the least trouble out of any previous Apple model. Upgrading is a snap, optimization is at an all time high, not to mention that they are the best running machines (I'm not talking speed, I'm talking smoothness) ever. I, too, am upset about the 'dumping' of the Newton, but at that time, Apple needed to concentrate on their premiere products. If they didn't drop the newton, that may be all that they would have made, every other product would have suffered. I'm personally ticked that the "Mac Like Things" group was axed, but I GOT OVER IT! Like I've said in other postings, without Jobs, (past, present, future) Apple would not exist. You claim that all the substance of OSX is from BSD, what about Quarts? Carbon? Cocoa? Aqua? NetInfo? A lot of the technologies in OSX came from NeXTStep, Not BSD!
I know this isn't really the place to ask, but... I've been looking for a copy of A/UX for over two years for my Apple Workgourp Server 95 to put into my "Road to X" museum.. Any help?
The Reason Apple Controls the Hardware and Software is so that it works! How many times have I heard "Well, i need a new motherboard to support this software," or "My Video Card doesn't work with AMD Processors." Apple makes the Hardware and the Software to ensure that they work properly together. Remember back in the day when there were Mac Cloners? Do you know how hard it is to get anything above Mac OS 8.1 on them? You might reply, "Thats because Apple wants you to buy their hardware now." NO.. its because the Mac Clones were built CHEAP, they were designed to only work with what was made then. I have a PowerMac 9500 running Mac OS X Server 1.2 and WebObjects 4.5. You know why? Because Apple makes it all work together. MOSXSv1.2 isn't supported on anything below a G3, but it works nonetheless! Anyway.. slightly off track here. Jobs made Apple. If Jobs did not exist, Apple would not exist. If Apple would not have purchase NeXT, Apple would not exist. If Jobs had not turned Apple around, Apple would not exist. You say that he hasn't given anything back? What's Darwin, What's Darwin Streaming Server, OpenPlay, Network Sprocket? Jobs didn't hijack anything. Apple Innovates, thats what it does best. They change the world for the better. Go to the Convention and learn.
It seems that MS is noq going up against the world. Most major Computing companies are now adopting some sort of Open-Source projects, Apple, HP, IBM, Corel, etc.(well maybe Corel will be dropping out soon). Many other companies/ organizations started because of Open-Sourcing, Red Hat, Apache, Netscape kinda. And how many innovations have come along because of Open-Sourcing? Today's technology would not be where it is right now if it had not been for the developers working for free to make the world better. I thank them for that.
How can MS say that it is Bad? Are they just afraid that they are going to lose a couple bucks? Companies, mainly MS, have to start thinking "For the better of the people", than "I want some more money."
What if MS doesn't start with Open-Source projects, what if they try to stop other non-profit groups, like that really big non-profit organization that helps people buy food, builds roads, builds houses, sends our mail, you know.. the Government!
I think that MS is just trying to get some attention like usual. If they actually believe what they are saying, then they are friggin crazy and must once again be stopped. I really wish that Ross Perot would have bought them when he had the chance.
If Corel stops making Linux, they can go to hell too.

I've gotten the Grey Screen of Death.. ya know, when the Mac's so screwed that it doesn't even look for a hard drive.
