  1. Why? on Crypto · · Score: 1

What was the very original reason for cryptography? Was it so that the enemy would not know our plans? I have been in military intelligence (I know it's an oxymoron) and have encountered the reasons that cryptography exists. I also understand why the government "taps our phone lines". I have lived in several countries and have found that, with all of it's flaws, I like living in the good ole USA the best.

  2. The Future is starting today on What Will The Internet Of The Future Be Like? · · Score: 1

Everybody has such a wide variety of opinions. It's good to know that the "company I keep" is of the cerebral type.

In 1995 my father told me he wanted to buy a computer. He was 70 years old then. He asked me a very obvious question. "What can I do with a computer?" The only answer I could give him was the one thing that really annoys him and that is answering a question with a question. "What do you want to do with a computer?"

The internet will go the way of the radio and TV. Big business wants your dollar so they'll find a way to get you the internet "for free." Have you bought a car that doesn't have a radio? You don't really need cable or satellite. All you need to do is buy a TV or radio and you get programming for free. freeinet

I think that Sony will find a way. Sony TV's, radios and MP3 players. This is where the dog could be brought to the ground or catch it's tail. Napster is being shot at. Sony "bought" Sting for 55 million dollars. ("and the only thing you have to do Mr. Sting is give us all the rights to any music you make for the next ten years.") Prince went and changed his name to some unpronouncable symbol till his contract was up so that he could get his name back.I can't wait for SONY to take a couple shots at Napster!

We need to contact all netizens and let them know that the internet will be what they want it to be. How can we do it gracefully?(Nobody wants SPAM!)

  3. Universal IDE on Mozilla x (Perl + Python) = New IDE · · Score: 1

Finally PERL is getting an IDE! It will include Python and Javascript.

Does anyone know of one single IDE that can be configured for any programming language at all? I don't mean any text editor. I would like a full blown IDE that is configurable for any programming/scripting language that is, has been or will be.

  4. OLGA on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1

The OLGA (On Line Guitartab Archive) was taken down because the HFA (Harry Fox Agency) sent a cease and desist letter. The HFA is an agency that "helps" published music writers collect royalties.

HFA says that since the OLGA contained Tabulature (a different method for reading guitar music) for free, that netizens would be going there instead of buying music. HFA was indifferent to the facts that

    1. That transcriptions were created by non-published non-professional musicians.
    2. Every transcription at OLGA had a little disclaimer that said basically "I do not guarantee that this transcription is correct since I am not the artist, I have not published any music and I'm doing this for free, so if it's wrong call someone who cares."

I think that this was done by HFA to head off the possibility of losing income. As usual the big guy has more money to oppress the little guy.

Until netizens unite and use only predetermined methods on the net, big business will still have a say.

I am a musician. I used to go to OLGA to learn. I suppose I could go to the library, but what are the chances that they will have a transcription of Metallica's latest recording?

I follow the music business because I have to . Sony shoves garbage down my throat. So do a lot of the other big music people. It bombards me.

When I want something new and different, I go to IUMA or some other type of out outlet.

If you would like to discuss the music business, call someone with an MBA, NOT a musician.

  5. Is offshore the answer? on Can Web Sites Go Offshore For Free Speech? · · Score: 4

I don't think that offshore is the answer. The Internet is a GLOBAL community. I think that big business is just that, BUSINESS. They are in business to make money and anyone that thay percieve is attempting to take away their fair share of the pie is subject to their intervention. How do we create a global community that is not subject to big business intervention? I propose a VPI. (Virtual Private Internet) Has anybody done this yet? Maybe Big Business is reading this right now and will steal the idea. Free speech is a constitutional right. Copyright is not. The only way to prove copyright is with sufficient documentation and witnesses to stand up in a court of law. I declare this message copywritten in my name. That is all the notice I need to put on this work to copyright it according to US law. International copyrights are a different matter. Now if anyone tries to use any of the words in this post I could try to sue them. (maybe Merriam Webster should sue the entire english speaking world) It won't stand up in a court of law, but I could still try. Once again I think a VPI would be the way to go. "hackers" could support "hackers" and exclude "big business" from infringing on that "net". W3 was a good idea. How about a new consrtium? VPI1?
