  1. Re:Compac vs. Intel on Compaq announces Beta test for Linux Alpha C compiler · · Score: 1

Half a decade ago I did some performance comparisions of different machines and compilers (available here).

The DEC C-Compiler was way faster than gcc (352ms compared to 464ms on a 21066-166).

All old numbers, but it gives a hint.

  2. Re:Typical Apple benchmarking (lack thereof) on Apple announces the G4 · · Score: 1
I'd like to read a press release that's not all that hype. And there has no announcement shown up at the CPU info center yet.

A SPEC_fp number would be interesting, not some integer benchmarks from a computer magazine. I'd use a FFT for a DSP benchmark not for a state of the art microprocessor.

  3. Re:Linux and Alpha - A Great combination... on Alpha Can Live Without Microsoft · · Score: 1

I'm following the Alpha processors since 1992 and they are *really cool chips*.

I ran a Alpha Linux box for a while. What is annoying: you can't get programs that are delivered as binaries (a Netscape 2 stolen from Digital Unix was the only browser besides Mosaic).

I think support has got better and a 21264 with Linux would be a cool box today.

  4. Wavelet compression is astonishingly good... on Yet Another New Image Format · · Score: 1

wavelet compression has many advantages over jpg:

no 8x8 tiles, progressive loading (with only few percent of the whole data astonishingly good picture quality is possible)

wavelets are very well suited for compressing natural photographs (I have seen some demos)
