+1 for this. Many "American programmers" expect jobs to come to them, not the other way round. The entitlement emirs expect jobs to be served on a platter.
You are better off getting a Master's in the field of your choice from a top-ranked university. It is not so much what they teach you, it is the following:
1. You get exposed to a wide range of fields so you can pick and choose what really fascinates you. 2. You meet a lot of great people and network, so you can open more doors that just mailing resumes. 3. Finally, going back to school gives you the time and bandwidth to think through these issues (rather than the daily rigmarole of a job)
Your "successful career" is limited to making mcsandwiches at your local deli and your "consulting work" is for your right hand. If you have ever done anything even remotely entrepreneurial you wouldn't be spouting this bullshit.
Now get back to making that BLT for the next customer in line.
"There is no shortage of programmers or software engineers in the U.S.; there is a shortage of people who are interested in being paid next to nothing."
You actually LOVE that phrase, stop chanting it like a mantra. It is not quite that simple. There are some companies that abuse the H1B and other work visa programs. That calls for strict zero-tolerance enforcement. But if you really want to know what the hiring situation is like, startup your own company and hire people. People like you should get off your fat asses......
There is a serious talent shortage...as a founder of a company I know for a fact how bad the problem is.
You and your fellow ranters should approach Socialist Paradise Venture Fund and ask them to fund your Socialist Utopia startup, where you can do all the things you call for. Hire only US Citizens, Pay $200K to starters out of school, never outsource a single job. No "cheap labor", no foreigners, no H1Bs etc.
Why blame MS, Google, Intel et al? do your own thing! An example is worth a million rants.
p.s. people like you never take a single risk, sit on your fat asses all day and expect some entitlement. Don't like it here? move to North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela...all great places that you should love.
I can buy this story..I interviewed with Google recently and at least 3 interviewers (in a plethora of 18 and counting interviews) asked me the same question:
"if Google comes out with an instant messenger product what features should it have"

Why can't this be used for wireless power in general? For example, beaming power to laptops, phones, and what-have-you...or Is it?

The link I posted is scr*wed up, try looking for "Torrentulla" in the workspaces section on http://www.gotdotnet.com.
It is an open-source project using Gnutella in combination with BitTorrent (there is already a pre-alpha release available)
There is a couple of efforts to combine Gnutella with BitTorrent
