The first, of course, is simple capitalism. The poor, starving people of the world don't have the funds to pay for food. This is one that both individuals and countries can resolve, if they find it in their hearts to want to.

The second is distribution. Getting the food to those poor, starving people is actually more complex yet. It's not as easy as writing a check, or even sending a ship full of food to their closest city. Remember the scandal in the 80's over all the food sent to Ethiopia and how little of it actually reached the people who needed it most?

Don't forget that during Ethiopia's "famine", the country was actually exporting food grown in Ethiopida to other countries! World hunger is a problem of distribution and money, not food.

  20. why bother migrating? on Run Gnome -- On Windows · · Score: 2

Windows folks will have a high quality free X server available. From there it's a simple jump to Gnome and KDE applications on Windows. That's the migration path.

Why would a Windows user want an X Server? Why would a Windows user want to migrate to Gnome? IT departments support Windows applications and no "migration" would realistically aim to dump those. I don't see the benefit for Windows users. They don't care about the GPL. They care about their hard work and data.. which happen to be in Windows apps.

    You can write something new.

I think 1010011010's point was that plugins are new code, but NOT a new PROJECT. A newbie can create something new without the huge investment of creating a new project (such as makefiles, docs, mailing lists). Someone writing a plugin (such as an Apache or Linux module) has lots of example code and an existing community with which to learn and share.

Open source projects like Apache and Linux have blossomed specifically because they have a plugin architecture. I like to call this a "Christmas tree" architecture because new features the original designers never dreamt of can be added to the project, like hanging ornaments on a Christmas tree. ;-)
