  1. Re:Woe is.. on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

I don't believe in the rich stealing from the poor, but fans buying albums and making their favorite musicians rich I have nothing against.

I have a decent collection of CDs because I buy CDs when I like them. I copy CDs too, but it's most often to either let a friend get a chance to listen to music I like and think they will like, or to try something I wouldn't be buying in the first place. Occasionally I buy something I already have a copy of. I have Dark Side of the Moon on 8-track, record, cassette and CD. Should I have bought 4 copies over the last 25 years? ... Probably. It's still one I listen to on evenings when I have the place to myself and just want to enjoy my time alive.

There are moralistic reasons I buy music and if you want to walk the high ground on topics like M$, Adobe, shareware etc., don't contradict it by snagging for free for what you should be paying for.

  2. Re:Only bad managers demand the impossible on Project Management For Programmers? · · Score: 1

When I was leading a web team a couple years back, I had 4 projects I was already juggling with pressing deadlines and was asked to add yet a fifth. I explained my workload and that I didn't believe it was possible to get this next project done with the load already pressing my team and I was not met with understanding. A new less experienced team lead said that they could do it, so I kindly accepted this 'passing of the torch' kind of thing.

The Director raved on and on how this other person was a real "team player" and a real "go to guy." It made me feel like a heal for quite some time until I ultimately quite. The project ended up coming in late and well over budget, but I was forever cast by management as a turd in the punch bowl.

I think the key is to communicate openly and honestly, try hard, and if things don't work out, it was probably meant to be. Currently I'm doing very well. I left there and doubled (honestly) my income, but did have to take a position with less leadership and responsibilities to begin again with.

I'm happy with how it worked out because I felt as if I tried hard and did a good job. Many of my teammates still email often about how things are and hope to work for me again. I know that it was their faux pas to do things the way they did, and I also know that I am better because of the whole thing.

Work hard, play fair, and live by the golden rule. I don't think it is possible to have a bad life when doing these things. ... Of course I only can attest to my own experiences, and I don't recall any past lives.

  3. Cutting back budgets... on "Industry Standard" Paycuts in IT? · · Score: 1

The company I work for is letting all us contractors go before our contracts are up. It's not the greatest feeling, but it has shown me very clearly, as I watch all the others get laid off, that I do have something going for me since I'm still here.

12 gone, 3 to go, and at least I'm one of the 3!
