  1. Re:lame lame lame on Firefly Premieres Tonight · · Score: 1

I'll give you that the country music was a little off-putting. But the rest of your review...well, I disagree.

Horrible acting? I didn't see that. None of the characters had a wooden delivery, they all seemed very realistically portrayed to me. They seemed alive enough. Plot? The plot is, here is a ship with a crew of individuals from varied and colorful backgrounds, with different skills that are complementary and that hang around together for mutual benefit. They are trying to survive in a universe where life is rough despite their high technology. Sounds pretty familiar (Farscape for example) and promising. Character development? Leaving aside the question of how much character development can you have with an ensemble cast in a one-hour (minus commercials) episode, we know something about each and every character. You know the captain was in a war; you want they should give a complete backstory for each character in the first hour? Sheesh.

Young guns with spaceships? Well, why not? People are pining for westerns. Brisco County is the last western-style show I can remember (I never watched Dr. Quinn, I gather it was pretty good, but it's been off a while now). Others are whining that it rips off Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. Well, so what? Aren't we always wishing that our favorite animated shows would be done live-action, and done well? Here's one.

How do you know that 500 years from now revolvers won't exist? Kinetic-kill weapons are a staple of science fiction as much as flashy zap-guns with their dubious physics (you know how ridiculously much energy those things take?). Science fiction isn't about zap guns, it's about postulating possible futures based on current trends and understanding human nature. Good science fiction is about telling a compelling story; the technology is almost always secondary.

I'm going to stick with it. I'm heartbroken about Dark Angel too. I'm also heartbroken that VR.5 didn't get to finish its story, and Harsh Realm and Nowhere Man and on and on. I hope Firefly bucks the trend and gets enough time to tell its story.
