There are two main paradigms:
To be
excellent
in some existing technologies. (eg. to be a guru in administrating Linux, to be a guru Java programmer.)
To be
innovative
to create new technologies. (eg. to invent the quickSort algorithm, to invent the Web)
#2 does not always give you lucrative financial rewards.
