  1. Re:Envy? on Linus vs Mach (and OSX) Microkernel · · Score: 2

It would be fairly simple to create a userfriendly piece of software if you knew the exact hardware that it was going to be running on. With everyone and their mother making hardware for the x86 platform there is no way to include drivers for software that hasn't been written yet.

I've never used a Mac but I never seen any really arcane hardware for it, everyone seems to use pretty much the same things aross the board. Then again maybe I'm a biased x86 person and don't know what I am talking about.

If you would have read the article closely you would have noticed that he modified his apt.sources to point to the unstable version of Debian (Woody).
It has not been as well tested for bugs and conflicts as the stable version. So you see, it technically was his own fault.

(I've slightly messed up a debian installation by grabbing unstable too. I managed to work it out though. I've never on the hand messed up anything simply by updating from the stable distribution.)

What about putting the slashdot effect to good use ? Have the EFF or some other trustable third-party set up a web page with all kinds of banners from around the internet. If every user took time out each day to click on those banners, at 2-5 cents per click; the money could add up very quickly. I've tried suggesting this before, hope someone will take advantage of it.

  6. Sitehost4u.com (Linux Servers) on On The Subject of Web Hosting · · Score: 1

I've been using this site for a while to host my site. They are fairly cheap with a few nice options. For anyone who does not know their way around a linux system, they offer a control panel type service so you can change settings on your website without having to SSH in (Telnet is disabled). The also do not allow dynamic ip's to send mail through your mail server. You must provide them with a list of ip's that can send mail(Cuts down on spam). They offer 10 gb of bandwidth on most plans and if you go over, they do not cut your ascess off. They simply bill you for the used bandwidth. They also have a quick technical response time. During their daytime hours (9 to 5 CST) you can always call someone. Outside of that you can usually e-mail up to 4 or 5 hours past 5 o'clock and receive a response. All in all I've been pretty satisfied with them.

  7. Wow, L0pht on DVD CCA Applies for Restraining Order · · Score: 1

Isn't it strange how a member of L0pht (the group that testified before congress) is now being sued. I wonder if the fact that he is considered a valuable expert by the government will play a part in the dismissal of this lawsuit.

The way I see it people are forcing companies to grab many domain names. How many of you have ever typed a url out pretty quickly and hit a wrong key. Then 78 banners pop up and you realize your at a pr0n site. If people wouldn't abuse the system, there would be no need for companies to register all their names. But if Hasbro does not own clue.com , would some newbie typing that url in know that the site he found wasn't a part of Hasbro ?

Games aren't programmed badly, well most aren't. How would you like it if your brand new game never crashed, but you only got 10 fps out of it on a 300 mhz machine with 128 mb of ram. Game programmers are trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your computer that they can, they are doing things that probably weren't meant to be done, all to make the game run faster. It's your choice, ask for stability and slow speeds or instability and faster speeds.

    2. MS is NOW writing a Lunix clone (think I remember a /. article on this...but don't see it in the older section...could be simply delusional) as well as porting IE to Linux - embrace and extend from multiple fronts

They might be also writing a Linux clone but in Windows 2000 there is going to be the capability to run Linux applications on top of Windows. They got together with Interix to achieve this.
