I too wonder what will happen to ATI or Matrox. Granted, Matrox does high-end video stuff, and ATI has all their OEM contracts. But for how long. ATI's new Radeon does have nice hardware design, but as usual, their drivers are total crap. The Charisma (what ATI call their design) engine should be faster than NVidia's, as they compress things in hardware. As all tests indicate, however, that this is not the case due to poor drivers.
It's too bad mismanagement has forced another good technology company to go under. Any any business grad could tell you, there is something known as core competencies of a company. These are things that a company does best. 3dfx used to be great design place, then they bought STB and went into manufacturing. By doing this, they strayed outside their core competency. The rest, as they say, is history...
I just hope that NVidia doesn't get monopolistic on us and become a hardware M$.
