  1. Easy answer on Packet Filter On University Network · · Score: 2

I am almost certain that the school's reason for doing this is bandwidth related. In order to let students do what they want and keep the network running smooth, use prioritization. University run systems are true-firewalled, while student machines are DMZed and are lower priority than University machines. See QoS/fair (unfair!) queing.

Regardless of what Channel 1 says you can and can't do, most schools just don't care.

The bonus for schools using Channel 1 is that they get free TVs. This is a very good thing actually - we've used our TVs to do in-school shows instead of having to heard everyone to a single room (and I get to do the whole production because nobody else seems to know how...). However, we cheat. We do some of those productions during Channel 1. Also note that students may do other things on there own, even if Channel 1 says they can't. Parents are allowed to remove students from any class, etc. that goes against what they feel is right - including the time that Channel 1 is on. And since no school I know of gives a Channel 1 "grade", they can miss it for the whole year.

PS - Channel 1 is also off in my class room right now. Lightning strike...

You need to go the other way around. Get them to learn from a simple KDE destop running under X and with easy software. Then teach the people how to use the front ends. Move on to installing software the real way from there. Next head onto how the system works. Slowly migrate into command-line apps from there to be done in via an Xterm.

It's evolution basically. At this point, I'd start teaching them Unix hacking (differentiate hacking and cracking...). From here, your students will KNOW how to use *nix.

The final step is to go LFS - have them build a Linux From Scratch System. You have total control over everything done in the computer and know the system by heart (heck, you built it from scratch!). I doubt there is any experience in Linux more fulfilling and educational (and downright cool) than building your own OS. If you want to be really nice, let them burn it to a CD when they're done!

The people that you want to aim for are business users and heavy gamers that want the best. Small to medium businesses need somebody who knows what they need without the cost. The two ways to get that are to hire a consultant or go to a store that provides that service with their sales. Offer that service via the sales... Also, in order to sell your systems, you'll most likely want to offer support. That's a key area in buyer's minds.

Basically, you'll want to follow AlienWare's strategy for gaming systems. The strat for business customers would be to evaluate what they need and sell them on that (based on what they tell you). Be sure to call it a free service or something (drags in managers). Unless you're planning to run consulting on the side, however, DON'T GO TO THEM FOR FREE! You definitely don't want to spend all your time nursing your customers...

The nice thing about this strategy is that you can keep a low stock and get most of your sales through the Value-added method. Sound confusing enough? Good :)
