I gotta think that that $299 first trade was some e-trade newbie who didnt know what a limit order, meeting a machine trader with a decision rule that said, "IPO, no trades, lets try 10*X-1 and see if there are any hits".

Damn, I wish there had been a way to find people

    That's capitalism at it's purest.

I agree. If these places would go with OpenIPO, they would get alot more money to themselves, and less to inventment bankers. While the underwriter does perform a service to warrant their fee, no one "earns" US$1e8 in a day, especailly not for screwing their client and pricing the stock too low. Are the news blurb for the IPO price pop really worth the megabucks it costs the new company? That's some really expensive PR.

In the United States, college education is also partially state funded, and everyone who has demonstrated ability does get a chance.

The reporter spun it a slightly different way, in a manner that makes sense given their readership (an area with pretty strong Mexian community) emphasizing the advantage that those who have money against those who don't is seriously reduced by Open Source. M$ and the SPA are constantly whining about the "billions" they are loosing in Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America. Wouldn't it be sweet if their problem was "solved" by the people there preferring to clone Linux+Gnone CDs instead of Windows & Office CDs.

Yes, fighting "dirty wars" thru front-men is always a evil and nasty business. The Europeans developed it to a fine art using natives and colonials in Africa, South America, and North America. Before our independence, *we* were used as those "front men".

    >Marxism is about all humans are equal
