Actually the crazy Californian's, have got them all crunching away, running the useless "SETI@HOME" program. Thus a DOS attack wouldn't be noticed!! (Actually, it might save energy).
"SETI@HOME" is fairly useless, since the program is only looking at 1/15000th of the useful RF spectrum.
So here you are, consuming upwards of 50watts/hr extra per cpu + A/C costs + poor power factor(50% multiplier), running a nearly useless program. (right up until the lights go out!!!)
Note: 50watts my general estimate of difference between halt/idle mode and full blown usage of CPU/FPU/cache/memory subsystems. Also 'M$' screen savers stop running once they blank the monitor. (some thing you should always do anyway.)
"Halt/idle" CPU mode is used by default in single CPU's os's like NT, BSD, and LINUX.
"Halt/idle" is also the default in SMP os's like Linux & maybe W2k.
"Halt/idle" mode must be activated or have an extra program installed in W95, 98, NT SMP, & ME?.

Most of these scientists, have global warming models that are grossly inaccurate. I.E. Errors >50% on the high side! Why, they didn't take into account the effects of companion aerosols in the atmosphere. So need to change the reflectivity of the atmosphere, reformulate our gasoline to produce more tail pipe aerosols, if needed.
I failed to see, why everyone goes bonkers over trying to control the enormously expensive supply side, when there exist much cheaper ways to control global warming or cooling.

1st.. 28.2Mbps isn't all that much more when compared to OTA data rate of 19.2Mbps. Thus the disk comsumption figures quoted by company reps is still false and misleading. Also note: There is NO PC recording option for HDTV that doesn't use the digital stream for recording. I.E. No one even tries, or has plans, to record all three of the analog streams(RGB).

B.T.W. HDTV uses Mpeg-2 encoding, switch to Mpeg-4 you get four times more recording time.

Seams to me, that this experiment's results could have been predicted from start. Think of all the energy consumed, Approximately ~$66,000/day, that could have been, should have been, put too better use.

I accessed the system thru some terminals located in Chicago. Overall they had somewhere around 1000 to 2000 graphical terminals hooked up.
Thus we have modems, keyboards, graphical terminals, servers, even pointing devices all LONG before BT even dreamed of filing thier patent.
Oh B.T.W., this should also invalidate most of the one click crap as well. (How about one touch).
Our Patent office is guilty of gross negligence, they are incompetent to manage the Patent system, since they a have based ALL their searches on a wholy inadequate prior art database in the appropriate fields.
The problem with depending on public pads is that you are dependent on retrieving them. All the opposition, hackers, or government needs to do; is to corrupt the retrival mechanism. I.E. Post fake pads with the same key sequence around the internet. Another way is to hack existing key pads change the contents. In a relative short time the whole scheme collapses.
