  1. The work is Context and Licensed Based on Adam Hinkley's IP Hindsights · · Score: 1

This really boils down to who ended up owning the software when. As the article stated it was more or less confusing. Most people (myself included) draw a distinct line between free work and paid work. There are times when they cross (say for instance I write a small utility in my spare off time that I want to use at work) but by doing the work in my spare time, according to MY employment contract, it may be licensed by me under the license of my choice. As a case in point, when I worked for Lockheed Martin, I could not do this (one of the reasons I left) because my employment contract basically stated I could not do anything technically oriented (kind of a broad term) and patent/copyright - whatever - without letting them review it first and deciding whether or not they wanted it. This is a case of naivety, nothing more.

  2. This Guy is a Friggin Idiot on Linux Should Be Shunned · · Score: 1

And you can quote me by NAME on that.

Any OS can be tweaked, this is crap, what is worse, this moron does not even know how to write. You have to wade through 4 pages of facts to get to the point when he should be doing pyramiad writing.

Not too mention ( back to the tweaking thing) most (if not all) U*IX (and mainfraome OSs in general) can be modified either at the OS level *or* the apps level and lets face it - the apps is where it is at.

I suggest this author grow and learn to write.

We know this already. All of it. The statements about Linux are misinformed, the guy is at a loss there, But we all know the change is going to abstract the internetwork - fucking duh.

What this really smart fellow is missing out on is the underlying structure will still be maintained and built by hackers. In that respect, nothing will change.

It hasn't since the beginning. SO I would ask one of two things:

    1. Don't post userland crap here
    2. tell this guy to pull his head out

I mean Rob Pike's gripe was better than this trash.

  5. It Would Be Nice on Has Linux Development Become Too Political? · · Score: 1

It would be nice if stuff like this was toned down or private. I had a similar incident happen on a private (like a bunch of people I know) discussion group. The particular person (or me) was being a total peen about something so we hashed it out privately.

I am a firm believer in not fighting in public unless_there_is_no other option. I mean heck, there are a lot of people I have dealt with in the Linux, UNIXoss, GNU or whomever community, who are allegedly important, smart or suffering from cranial enlargement and they were total freaking dickbags. We all get that way about certain things.

I do not really know (or really care) if their attitude was political or penal related, but they kept if between us. Any public discussions we had were quite civil.

But I have been nice enough not say anything about it. When something is public, saying something that seems mean, even a phrase as trivial as shut up, makes you look bad.

The worst problems are unaddressed ones, at least this reader brought it to someone's attention. One thing I fucking despise are the haughty who refuse to answer your queries because you teed them one way or another. They are so sacless as not to try and resolve a problem. In such a case I can see where public lambasting may have to take place because, again, there may not be an alternative.
