I would gladly redirect a significant part of my taxes to an endeavour like this, instead of sinking money into less forward thinking bottomless pits the politicians created
Or we can recognise that all species have a shelf life, and embrace our destiny. If the chips fall against us, we should go out in style, not cower away from it.
that's a good theory, except people who already try that get locked away in jail for murder, crimes against humanity or genocide
A failed mission to Mars might make a great snuff movie... I can just imagine the dialogue... "Houston, we've had a problem... we are venting out into space... it's definitely a gas of some sort... it's gotta be Neil Asstrong's fart... hurry up Sally RideMe and put my snorkel in your mouth before you suffocate"
On second thought I'd probably do better by typing "boobs" in a Google search
New supplies, and new colonists, would arrive every 2 years.
Their job is to set up a colony on Mars. They don't exactly need money.
They've done a feasibility study which consulted space experts from around the world
The habitat (6 landers) and 2 rovers will already be on the planet by the time the first team lands, with 5 more landers just a few weeks behind them.
this is all pretty funny stuff, but on a more serious note... if the colonists see a huge alien spaceship with thousands of eggs in it, they should definitely nuke the site from orbit
if they're going to use the highly original name "mars one" they would definitely need val kilmer as "space janitor" and carrie-ann moss as... err... eye candy:)
NAT will still be required for ipv6 because for most of us ISPs will still (as with ipv4) only hand out a single public address per subscriber, so home and small business LANs will still need NAT regardless of whether they use ipv4 or 6
it may also become standard practice for NAT routers to route ipv4 LAN packets to ipv6 for WAN transmission
Just add firewalls to IPv6 routers, and the same purpose will be served.
iptables can perform NAT and firewall functions, but good luck trying to get your typical Windows Defender type firewall to perform NAT. if NAT is arbitrarily removed from new generation ipv6 (generally iptables powered) router appliances, many LANs would be broken
NAT is just a lookup table used to map addresses of incoming packets... it could be used for any type of addressing.
its only security advantage is that if it runs into an incoming packet for which the source address doesn't map to a corresponding record in the lookup table, it drops the packet (notwithstanding port forwarding etc), so for home users it works pretty well cos only the packets responding to outboud requests get translated.
of course the outbound requests could come from anything good or bad, which is where firewalls come into the picture (filtering protocols, ports, etc) but NAT is pretty useful as a gatekeeper.
libreoffice calc and impress are as good as excel and powerpoint.
i personally think powerpoint (and impress) are both abominations. if someone giving a presentation starts up a powerpoint presentation they may as well hold up a big sign saying "i don't know what i'm talking about and i don't want to be here", which doesn't offer them much credibility.
people like this are the ones that you can be sure know what they are talking about (and that they like what they do to the point where they probably have to be told to shut up). they are also funny enough the easiest to listen to and the most memorable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP4o0ArkP4s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhTgTJwvFdg
people who whine that they can't do such n such in calc that they can do in excel also conveniently forget the additional time that they have been learning and using excel compared to calc.
libreoffice draw is pretty good for doing flow charts. it possibly doesn't have some of the features of visio (i've used visio but not extensively).
for technical drawing, visio is nothing compared to autocad or draftsight. do you know any engineers or design draftspeople that use visio for drawing with? even autocad is slowly giving way to 3d parametric modelling with inventor, or if you're an aerospace company sucking on the government tit you can probably afford catia, but they are all similar.
i wouldn't be surprised if microsoft doesn't (or hasn't already) made an offer to buy autodesk.

just keep killing astronauts till you achieve your goals... killing astronauts isn't bad... governments aren't like criminals... you just can't compare the two
demand for national pride and political supremacy is far more important than the supply of astronauts
So that's how they get all those pilgrims to Mecca... they have a network of massively powered GPS transmitters around the world that try to redirect everyone to Saudi Arabia.
Explains why you hear those stories about people getting directed to drive into bodies of water.
if this is one of the dumbest comments you've ever read on slashdot... welcome to slashdot noob!
if you weren't a total twit you would realize how much sense the snippet you quoted actually makes, particularly in the open source world where there usually isn't any packaging at all beyond a few jpegs on the download website
you don't belong on the internet outside of goatse.cx

oxymoron much?
Even if it's just a spoof show and you don't send people off it could be worth voting to see politicians etc get voted off the planet ;)
why should it be a spoof show? if viewers were really voting to send politicians off the planet they would likely pay for the privilege
You should also realize that the whole things is a scam.
yes, i now realize that big brother is a scam... i want my multiple wasted hours back

just promise viewers that it's going to fuck up half way and you'll have money coming out your ears

well i can only imagine balmaer's reaction to a developer on the VB/C# compiler team at Microsoft working on a linux box...

"smart" devices is only a term relative to the morons that use them
Their layer of apps they force on phones is full of holes too.
at least its not full of stars... then i'd be worried
phew! and to think i was about to venture outside!
the most important function of a router security-wise is NAT
all the rest is fluff

Land of the free...
pretty much everything that we do in space at this point is new
you have a pretty crippled definition of "new"
perhaps you could enlighten us by sharing what exactly NASA is doing lately that could be considered "new"?
When the Gemini Seven were brought to the launch pad the first time to watch a rocket launch the thing blew up in front of them. They went on anyway.
That's Keynesian science for ya... yee haw!!!!
