  1. Re:Recovery CD's are GOOD thing. on Slashback: Secrecy, Toyware, France · · Score: 1

If you really want the Windows installation files, buy a burner and copy them from C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\, right where they've always been on OEM installations of Win9x. Nothing too tough there, is there?

I'd imagine that with the new "locked" CDs the Cab files will not be available this way.

In Britain I remember hearing about someone suing Gateway 2000 for shipping a copy of M$ Office 97 Small Business Edition that would only install on a specially installed Win95 (that was done by an OEM). If the owner were to reinstall the OS himself (or move to a different computer), the CD would not work.

    > Writing HTML is too expensive. [snip] much more expensive than someone who knows how to use Frontpage.

Whether you use a web authoring tool or write it by hand, it's still HTML, though FrontPage is a bad example as its graphics handling facilities are apalling.

    > The majority of people enjoy the experience of plugins such as shockwave...

The majority of people that I know don't have T1 connections and would prefer not to wait for anything, be it shockwave or unnecessary JPEGs. And not all have the relevant plugins installed. Therefore, plugins and animated graphics, etc. should be used sparingly, and should not be essential to the viewing or navigation of the site. Unfortunately, many personal sites do not realise this.

To use such a CD in caddies and slot-loading drives you need to use an adapter. Works for me!

  5. Re:sigh on Cleartype In Depth · · Score: 1

Cleartype effectively triples the horizontal resolution by considering the R, G and B sub-pixels separately. The "balancing colour fringing" is applied after the character has been rendered at 3x resolution, so all lines have a whitish appearance.

That said, I can't see what the big deal is. While you have 3x the horizontal resolution, you do not have 3x the vertical resolution, so improvement is minimal. You also have to use fonts that are well hinted for screen use in the first place, which are few and far between.
