  1. Re:G4 700 MHz? on Apple Releases New PowerBook and the eMac · · Score: 1

Yes, and PowerPC of a given megahertz is equal to a Intel style processor 2-4 times as fast. This is because the datapaths are wider, the instruction set is modern (rather than based on the 4004, etc).

You don't want Dazzle USB-- you want the Sony video to FireWire converter. A little box, you get DV video out (just like a DV camcorder) at high quality. Dazzle gives you low qualiy video. If low bandwidth is what you really wanted, I believe the dazzle works with makes, but you should be able to find out on their website.

Gee, you think the LCD being the display offered accross apples line isn't "courage of convictions"? The CRT is Dead, Jobs isn't a hypocrite. The emac, like the iPod, is a niche product.

Or do you think that Jobs is a liar because he describes apple as a "computer company" and the iPod is a "music machine"?

  3. IDC is not reliable. on Market Share Reports On Linux · · Score: 4

I used to work in the industry and had numerous discussions with "analysts" from IDC, Forrester, Jupiter, etc. My experience there showed me that all of these "Reports" and "Analysis" are really propaganda under another form.

The analysts are paid to write reports showing the growth and projected growth of various industry segments. These reports are commisioned by companies in the industries in question. They are then sold to other companies in the smae industry.

For instance, say I'm a major software vendor, and want to do a new product in the project management software industry- I'll have IDC write a report justifying why this industry is going to grow at %20 a year for the next decade. They will go and look for supporting evidence, but since statistics can often lie, when you go looking for a specific growth rate, you will find it.

So, for instance, while Apple continues to hold about %30 of the installed base of computers, IDC shows them with only %5 of the market, because its convenient for them to only count new computer sales for Apple. While Linux is probably 5 times as popular as they show in their "survey" windows is shown to be dominant.

Why? Because the people who have the money who pay IDC have a vested interest in windows.

This is no different than the investment bank that brought acompany public issuing a report with a buy recommendation on that companies stock.

There is NO credibility here, whatsoever.

  4. What is it you guys fear? on Apple Punishes ATI For Leaking The Cube? · · Score: 1

I'm constantly amazed at the levels of anti-apple bigotry that slashdot members show (in this case, CmdrTaco for forwarding this impossibly absurd story.) I'm not even going to address the content of it because anyone with half a clue knows it cannot be true. The real issue is the constant need to satisfy your insecurities by bashing apple... this need is exhibited constantly on these message boards and it really perplexes me. Linux runs quite well on Macintoshes and twice as fast as you're going to get on intel based hardware, so why not get over the jealousy, admit that all your snide apple bashing years are over and go buy a Mac? Linuxppc rocks. Otherwise, decide that for whatever reason you prefer intel or alpha hardware and let apple be. Fabricating garbage like this just shows you unable to deal with the fact that apple is putting out pretty killer machines. A server faster than anything intel is shipping in 8 cubic inches? It runs Linux? Rejoice! BitGeek

  5. Re:Nikon Coolpix on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1

I have a Nikon Coolpix 900. I am going to buy the 990 when it comes out. Here's what I like abou tthe Coolpix:

    1. It takes better pictures than film cameras! Yes, the resolution is lower, but the image quality, color quality, exposure, etc, is far better than I have ever gotten with a film camera. The software in the camera picks the best settings and even in poor situations (shooting into the sun, or north of the arctic circle, etc) the camera takes great images. I have never, in my life, gotten a satisfactory sunset picture until this camera!

    2. The form factor is the most innovative I've seen. IT looks odd and feels odd the first couple of days, but when you get used to it you can't imagine the constraints of going back to an SLR. You are only so tall- so being able to hold the camera over your head, or in a corner in a tight area in order to get the perspective you want for a picture and still be able to see what you're going to get to frame the shot is really wonderful.

    3. Nikon made great choices on technology. A digital camera is like a laptop- you have to choose well and compromise without compromising the product. If you buy rechargable NiMh batteries and a large compact flash card you have a great system.

    4. This camera is so much better than a film camera-- I get a lot more shots than I could with film and you will be surprised at how convenient it is not to have to reload film at inoportune times (like taking pictures of orcas that only surface periodically!) Plus, this camera gives you great shots right away to email to mom... no waiting for film to be developed. I mean, if your goal is to hang a picture on your wall, the better resolution of a film camera is an advantage-- but I think most people, and certainly me, would rather have all their picutres in the digital domain.

I have never regretted this purchase, and I haven't bothered to use a film camera since- expect for once when I forgot the Coolpix and I really missed it!

  6. Offtopic and Not News on Tech Stocks Tumble · · Score: 1

I agree with the editorial tendency not to report the stock market on slashdot. Its off topic because its not news and because its not news nerds need. Its not news because the market is down. The market goes up or down every day. Thats what the market does. Cisco isn't even down to where it was in December-- a short time ago. This is a short term market fluctuation-- like the market fluctuates every day-- and therefore its not news. Now a major change in the tech industry would be news and it would affect the market- but the news is the change in the industry, not a short term market swing.

  7. People who Hate iMacs have no lives on iMac Linux · · Score: 1

Why is it whenever you see an anti-mac article they have to resort to inane childish comments? You can call iMacs garbage all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that you cannot get a PC with as many features at the same performance from a reuptable company at that same price.

Of course, pointing out this fact is gonna create lots of flames along the lines of claiming that this isnt true-- but if you look, each example will be a slower, older PC, or from a fly-by-night company with no quality standards, or for a machine with a much slower processor than the iMac's PowerPC.

I know its irritating that Apple has been making kick butt machines all these years-- here's a suggestion: Get over your jealousy, come out of the closet and go buy one.
