  1. Maybe I'm doing something wrong... on The Marketplace Recognizes Game Makers · · Score: 1

I'm a game maker, and nobody ever recognizes me. :(

  2. Re:"Entitled" to new DVDs? on MGM's DVD Class Action Settlement · · Score: 1

Also note that nowhere in the suit does it say your DVDs will be replaced with the same DVDs. In fact, it specifically states that you can choose from a list. You're just going to get the movies they can't get rid of by any other means.

    Here's the relevant portion:

"If the proposed settlement is approved by the Court, Class Members who submit timely and valid Claim Forms may exchange each Eligible DVD for (i) a new MGM DVD from a list of 325 titles or (ii) $7.10."

  5. Re:Linksys WET 11 on WiFi Bridging? · · Score: 1

Or just get a Linksys WET. They're not quite as user-friendly as the DRY models, but you basically only get one (big) connection hiccup ever. Plus, you don't even need Internet access to use one to its full potential. Think of the money you'll save!

  6. Deep Junior? on Junior Wins Computer Chess, Fritz Crashes Out · · Score: 1

I'm not too keen on their naming conventions. Why not just "AntiKasparovBot 2004" for this year's entry, which can be easily updated to reflect the model for following years?

It'll happen, just as soon as Microsoft buys IBM, mark my words ;)

  8. SEGA == LOVE on New Sega Master System Hardware Debuts In Brazil · · Score: 2, Interesting

So despite their previous announcements to the contrary, Sega's not REALLY out of the hardware business. They're just sneaky bastards!

I, for one, still have my original SMS. I only have one game anymore, though, and that's Psycho Fox. But it's still good. The system's aged a bit better than the NES, despite having fewer titles.

They should really see about making an NTSC one. It's bound to be a pretty trivial conversion for the manufacturers.

  9. just on monkeys? on Playing Games With One's Brainwaves · · Score: 1

Atari was working on this at one point, when their business model started to tank in the mid 80s. It's not only not new, it's really really not new. And I can't imagine they were using monkeys for their games, because the SPCA has ensured that even monkeys don't have to play that godawful E.T. title they tried to push out.

  11. Poor level design == poor interface on Should Gamers Use Smarter Problem-Solving? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Sure, it's easy enough to blame the testers. But let's face it, how many times have you had to find a "secret switch" of some sort in order to get through something in a game? It's maybe a slightly irregularly colored brick, or a knob on a bed, or a hairline door-shaped-crack in a wall. Or maybe it's something that's not even noticeably useful until u put the mouse cursor over it, like a candlestick.

What I'm saying is that if every door in the level is useless, you probably won't bother messing with the door right near you, either. And if all the windows are useless, you become unaccustomed to checking them as well.

In a game like Deus Ex, the level itself is your interface. There's no more reason to click on seemingly useless objects in-game than there is to try mashing all the vowels on the keyboard simultaneously every 7 seconds for an hour "just to see what happens". It's a waste of the player's time. And, if the level design isn't at least slightly clear (and a 100% decision rate amongst playtesters to take the "obvious" route indicates that it's not) then the designers are wasting their precious time as well.

  12. Re:Forget Sun, get the OSS groups together on this on Sun Demurs On Open-Source Java · · Score: 0

It's a good idea, except for the part where Microsoft adds proprietary Windows-only extensions to it, patents the whole thing, sues all the developers, and earns Herr Gates a few billion dollars in stock inflation. You missed that part.

  14. My picks on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

All-Purpose Multi-Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku: a custody battle with tanks, guns, and a cute-android-girl-with-the-brain-of-a-cat :) Great fun.

Master of Mosquiton: Victorian-esque vampire anime with a film noir style feel to it. Excellent, if a bit too short.

Dragon Half: The funniest damn thing I've ever seen. Half-girl/half-dragon idolizes superstar dragon hunter, unwittingly avoids minions of evil king, that sort of thing.

Kimagure Orange Road: Mid-80's love comedy. Can give you a warm fuzzy feeling for days.

The Vision of Escaflowne: Many people didn't manage to see this one, as it was overshadowed by Evangelion (which ran the same season, in the same time slot). It's good. Damn good. Earth girl goes to medieval fantasy planet that has big mechas and a massive ongoing war. Extremely well done.

Most of these probably aren't available on DVD yet, though (not owning a DVD player) I haven't checked.
