I was at the American Medical informatics Association meeting in November. The conference presenters in the sessions I attended were divided into three major groups: Health Care Providers, Management and Software Developers (including academic folks). In general, at least one group in the audience had a contemptuous "no shit", "no way" or "who cares" response to what was, in fact, clever, original work (even though it did replicate some basic tenet of another discipline.) And that was the response if it was a completely correct conclusion!
That sort of mutual contempt between disciplines only ensures a continuous, wasteful cycle of "reinventing the wheel"
