There was a time when Apple was a good company. After Commodore Amiga went to pasture I bought a Quadra Mac (68040) and liked it. A nice easy-to-use system (though it lacked preemptive multitasking). But then it all went downhill.
Though I now have a PowerPC mac I would never buy another one, or any other apple product, because of their love to lockdown things. Its non-apple products from now on. I want freedom.
The weird thing is that neither Adams nor Jefferson were elected by the people. 1800 was pre-popular vote, so they were elected by the State Legislators. It wasn't really necessary for them to run ads in the newspapers, because the people had no say in who the next president would be.
Strawman. I asked politely. There was no whining. And this is not the first employer I've seen screen games.slashdot. In fact... all of them have so far. One even screened-out slashdot completely.
>>> All PC users got all DLC for free. All XBox users had to pay for the DLC.
If you want to make the argument "saving money" than the Xbox or any other console wins. A console costs about $200 plus tax. A gaming PC costs over 10 times that amount... plus frequent hardware updates (else the latest games won't work). Overall the gaming PC is a major eater of money, while a console is pretty cheap.
I bought PS3 for $200 (sale price) plus $18 for each game (greatest hits price) and have about 50 of them. So... $1100. Less than what I would have spent on a gaming computer plus games plus new video cards. Plus the frustation of games that simply refuse to install.
Because trying to make a game work on a PC is an exercise in frustration. I quit PC gaming in the late 90s when I couldn't make several games install without getting errors (or else working but randomly crashing). It wasn't like the old days of the Atari or Commodore or Amiga gaming when the game *just worked* straight out of the box.
Oh yes, I know, you'll say I should have upgraded to a better video card or better hardware. I did. I bought a PS2 and later a Gamecube which worked straight out of the box w/o Microsoft's broken OS/driver system. (And $200 for a console is a lot cheaper than paying $2000 for a new gaming PC every other year.)
>>>The hard work (discovering new drug targets) is done by the NIH anyway.
False.
And profit motive is what makes a doctor or hospital desire to do a better job (and draw customers away from the competition). If the profit motive did not exist and they knew they would get paid anyway, even if they did a shitty job, then they'd be like government-employed teachers. Let me cue-up the video where a teacher was criticizing Mitt Romney as a bully, but then threatened to cane a student who called Obama a bully too. The student said, "They cannot take away your right to have your opinion." The teacher states, "OK, do I have to get my cane? As a social studies teacher, I cannot allow you to slander any President." The teacher cannot be fired, so she keeps getting paid even as she does a lousy job. http://www.infowars.com/teacher-yells-at-student-criminal-offense-to-criticize-obama/
Funny then that Wii is the # 1 best seller. It is the Atari or NES or SNES or PS1 or PS2 of this generation. The most popular platform. AND if microsoft didn't want Xbox banned, then I guess they shouldn't have pushed to have Motorola phones banned. Ya know..... you don't throw the first punch unless you're prepared to get a bloody nose in return.
How do you implement this... simple solution... when most Xboxes are not net connected. Plus that doesnt solve the problem of the last five years games which have h.264 on disc. MS would still be noncompliant.
That sounds wrong. Can we hear some examples. Maybe if the corps get hurt bad enough by their patent wars they will bribe Congressman and presidents to make changes.
Are you using a strawman argument...... NO that is not what he said.
Also games.slashdot is blocked by my employer. Change it please. Maybe entertainment.slashdot..... typing on this tiny phone keyboard is a pain. Peas and thx
Microsoft wants it both ways. They want to block somebody elses product.... Android..... but not their own. Fairness says both companies should be blocked. Good for the judge.
I don't think the European Union contract has anything to do with this. AND: The theory was that government should provide all these "necessities" to the citizen: power, water, sewer, and internet. They believed the government would do a better job than for-profit company. (Ooops... they were wrong.)
>>>I prefer getting access from my local cable monopoly... . I think I'll avoid municipal internet, thanks.
The best scenario would be fiber owned by the state government (just like roads) and each customer gets to decide what brand internet they want to purchase: Comcast or Cox or AppleTV or Verizon or MSN (just like they choose what brand car to drive).
Of course you make a good point about how corporations, shitty as they are, are actually BETTER than government. The government can suck money directly from your paycheck, or bust down the door of your house, or drag you off to jail. A corporation can not.
>>> if one party in a civil contract is in any tangential way involved with a local government, then before a judge is involved, you can expect police harassment, criminal charges to be filed, etc.
It's always been this way. Look-up the history of Eli Whitney when he was trying to defend his patent over the cotton engine. The local government usually defended the farmers or inventors who had hand-built copies of Eli's work, and interfered with the ongoing civil lawsuit.
>>>Bush and Obama when the GFC exploded in their faces. They set aside their ideologies to take unpopular and decisive joint action that in my opinion avoided a global panic run on bank deposits and the subsequent great depression senario that would follow >>>
In case you have not noticed, the depression wasn't avoided. It was just delayed. And it appears it will be Europe that falls first, since their banks are the most heavily leveraged (50-to-1). The bailouts merely propped-up a rotten edifice that should have been allowed to crumble in 2008.
Then cleaned-up in 2009. A one year depression, like the one we experienced in 1921-22, rather than string it out over two decades (30s/40s) or three decades (Japan).
Oh well... good for him. He also invested heavily in several investment (gambling) banks in 2008. He probably knew in advance that they would get bailed out by the taxpayers. Buffett's a bit of a creep.
I'm amazed how many people are saying Microsoft. In essence you're saying Open Source solutions shouldn't even exist, because they are a non-starter. No wonder Intel and MS continues to hold a monopoly over the OS and Apps and computer platform since ~1988.
>>>They have been forced by Congress to fully fund their pensions 75 years out.
Yeah nice try but that law only took affect in the mid-2000s, and the USPS has been losing money since the 90s. It is the abandonment of paper billing/conversing for electronic billing/conversing that has resulted in 1997 being the last profitable year for the post office.
I invested ~$500 on BNBN (barnesandnoble.com) and it went bankrupt in 2002... I was paid back about $100. I just shrugged my shoulders and said "Oh well" but clearly I took the wrong approach. I should have sued instead!
(1) Invest in stock (2) Lose money. (3) Sue. (4) Talk to congressman about unfairness. (5) Hand him some cash. (6) Get bailout from taxpayers. (7) $profit
He'll probably buy the Facebook shares when they hit bottom. And the law Buffett wants passed would Not fix the "I paid less taxes than my secretary" problem. It raises the rates on rich person's income tax to around 90%...... but Buffett has almost no income. It's almost all capital gains which has a rate of around 25% and will not change under the Buffett Rule.
So basically he's trying to hurt people who work for a living (get paid wages & taxed at 80-90%) while he himself remains untouched. He's trying to secure his oligarchy as one of the richest men. IF the man was genuinely concerned, he'd ask the capital gains tax to be raised higher but of course he'll never do that, because the man is a shrewd investor..... he knows exactly how to look good but not pay any more tax.
