He made a comment without realizing that other people would react to it. He is now saying that the same thing happened with his memo.

What exactly are you arguing for here? That free speech should be denied if pointing out someone's lack of awareness makes them uncomfortable? Or that people should merely self-censor if it might upset someone?

    Speaking of projection...

Otherwise you have to accept that it's just people who are offended and upset trying to silence anyone who disagrees with them.

  3. There is definitely a shortage of embedded software engineers around here, and a lot of the ones that are available only want to do contract work. Companies dislike contracting for embedded because it's not like they can hand the completed code off to a normal software engineer for maintenance, and often they lack the skills to even write a suitable requirements spec to get the contractor to produce what they want.

Are they though? Taken in the context of "this is why women are less suited to engineering jobs" they don't seem very benign.

Try to imagine if the argument was that testosterone made men worse nurses, and you were trying to make it as a nurse. Imagine if you were black and some "rational" pointed out that statistically people with your skin colour have smaller skulls and thus smaller brains, and score lower on IQ tests so maybe it's not the poverty or the systemic racism that is making your life harder it's just that you were born too dumb to succeed.

The basic problem is that his memo didn't engage with a century of study into these issues, which have already debunked it.

His problem is that he does that classic "internet rational" thing of looking up some studies that support his established view, not reading them carefully enough and ignoring the historical context.

It's not just the Google memo either. Take this now deleted tweet:

The KKK is horrible and I donâ(TM)t support them in any way, but can we admit that their internal title names are cool, e.g. âoeGrand Wizardâ?

An extremely naive person might agree that "grand wizard" does sound kinda cool, because they don't know the historical context. The KKK chose those silly names to make themselves sound harmless. It's a simple, childish trick but one that people like Damore fall for. Their names are not cool at all, the correct adjective is deceptive.

So while I'm sure he doesn't intend to support the KKK in any way, unfortunately by ignoring this context and stating that their names are "cool" without further comment, he is helping them.

  8. Re:autism or not, reason should override "feelings on 'I See Things Differently': James Damore on his Autism and the Google Memo (theguardian.com) · · Score: 3, Informative

If anything the problem is that his memo tried too hard to be rational, to the point where it blinkered him to issues that don't have simple statistical definitions.

For example, he says that women are on average more neurotic, and that explains some of the gender gap. The problem with this argument is that it minimizes the other issues that cause the gap, which was in fact the entire point of his memo. It's also a huge generalization and the conclusion massively exaggerates the significance of the test results.

Damore also undermines his claim to be rational with his tweets. Once fired and free to speak his mind without filter, it becomes obvious what his biases are.

    https://twitter.com/JamesADamo...

A since deleted tweet documented here also demonstrates just how naive Damore is, and how he fails to understand historical context before making bold statements.

because it would hurt feelings is not acceptable

Unfortunately, it is very hard to have a rational conversation about these issues because Damore supporters mod down any dissent as "flamebait" or "troll".

The side cameras are monochrome plus red too, so the image would be in black and white.

Even that would be preferable to nothing though. They could do side and rear view. At the moment all they have is a rear camera view.

Did I mention that their current hardware doesn't even do basic stuff like auto rain sensing and 360 degree cameras. The Model X is an amazing car in many ways, but also lacks stuff that is standard on cars costing 1/5th as much. The promises of firmware updates that take years to come are not a substitute.

It makes me wonder how many engineers they have working on it when they can't get this basic stuff finished.

I have mixed feelings about Tesla.

On the one hand, the technology is cool, the cars are amazing and Musk has done more than any other individual to push electric vehicles forward. I might buy a Model X next year, in fact.

On the other hand, Tesla is selling full self driving as an option ($3000) to be delivered by firmware update at some indeterminate point in the future. They already massively exaggerated what their current Autopilot can do, their current AP2.0/2.5 hardware hasn't even reached feature parity with the old 1.0 hardware, and if you were to start a lease on a new Tesla today there is a good chance you would never actually see FSD before handing the car back.
