The spread of Fake News is a direct result of the death of truth. In the post-truth world you just assume everyone is lying all the time and pick the alternative facts that appeal to you the most.

  2. The problem with a web of trust is that each user needs to build their own, and it is easily corrupted, and does relatively little to stop the spread of fake news.

It's been tried but is too much work for too little benefit.

Everything that is available in the cinema is available for free a while later on FTA TV or by borrowing the DVD from your friend. So the value proposition is getting to see it sooner, be part of the buzz around it, and maybe make a night out of it.

Netflix is a bit different, because for most of their stuff the only way to legally watch it is to subscribe to Netflix. If anything that pushes the value of Netflix up.

I also prefer the episodic format of Netflix to longer movies in many cases. 3 hours is a big commitment for busy people, but a 45 minute - 1 hour Netflix show is more manageable.

I just need them to stop cancelling stuff I like.

  5. The issue with the way Apple does it is that you are forced to stay on the latest version if you want all the security updates. On Android they have separated out most of the core OS services and they get patched separately for security issues.

If you don't want the latest version of iOS, perhaps because it makes your device very slow, you have to accept no security patches too.

  6. This is a very common misunderstanding about Android versions.

The major named versions are feature updates. Just because you don't get them, doesn't mean you are not getting security updates, or app updates including the core Android stuff like the browser and Play Store.

Feature updates are a mixed blessing. One the one hand, you might get new features... On the other hand, you phone works differently to the way it was when you bought it, and a lot of people hate that. it might also get slower or have less free space available for your use.

It's entirely consistent and relatively minor compared to the achievements of the Skywalkers.

The law doesn't consider nature to be a factor. All it says is that people should be paid the same regardless of their gender, for equal work. That can include factors like experience level and time seniority.

The idea that men are on average better engineers is not considered and not a possible defence. It's really hard to see how they could have any plausible excuse.

Auto config seemed to be aimed at just detecting and understanding devices connected via MIDI without having to manually configure them. Also helps with chains and multiple devices not conflicting.

The web stuff just seems like a way to produce DRM infested software that you have to subscribe to. It's too hard to make software running on the client expire or prevent piracy, so they want to move it all server side.

The timing stuff is because if you have lots of MIDI devices it becomes difficult to keep them in sync and you can actually hear the time delays between instruments. The serial baud rate is only about 30kbps.

MIDI does kinda suck though, it's just that it's had various vendor specific extensions and hacks to keep it usable.

The low data rate and chaining is a problem when you have lots of MIDI devices. It becomes difficult if not impossible to synchronize them all. The stuff for describing instrument metadata and controlling instrument banks is all proprietary and not very good too.

I haven't read the new spec but it will be interesting to see if they can fix any of that stuff. If it's backwards compatible then the data rate hasn't increased.

Similarly it's pretty good on the environmental front, the only real down side is that "low temperature" means about 100C so it does require heating to operate. As ever it's a trade off between build cost, running code, efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Correct, but also missing the effect of geographic distribution. Turns out that when you have enough capacity over a wide enough area the capacity factor of the fleet as a whole goes up a lot. Throw in some battery backup to smooth output and handle peaks and you have a capacity factor close to coal or nuclear.

Obviously you still want a mix of energy sources, and long distance transmission lines, but 4x overbuild for capacity is likely excessive.

Something similar happened on the radio in the UK. Thing is the law says you can't discriminate based on gender, and just saying "one gender doesn't negotiate pay as well as the other" doesn't actually mean you didn't discriminate by taking advantage of that fact.

Although they're a small part of the population, I'd bet the Asian Americans are also up, possibly even more than 29%. People who buy into the notion of white privilege should be happy as it appears that's worth a lot less than it used to be. Otherwise it just looks like economic osmosis.

The extremely obvious reason for this is that they started off in a worse position, and as they gained more equality of opportunity their wages rose significantly faster. Of course that doesn't mean they have caught up necessarily either.

Sure enough, if you look at average earnings by demographic, that's what you see.

  25. The "different choices" argument is often made, but it's not really fair to claim that all these things are choices. For example I'm sure many mothers would be happy if their partners took an equal amount of leave and did an equal amount of the parenting chores. And in reality they tend to get penalized anyway, e.g. when men become fathers they tend to get a small overall increase in income (thought to be because they are seen as more mature) where as mothers get a significant decrease (because they are perceived as being divided between family and work) even if they dedicate the same amount of time to parenting.

"Statistics already show that wages are already almost entirely unrelated to demographics"

Really, being born into a poor family has no impact on future earnings?
