How about before making silly comments folks actually have a go at reading the patent? It's a method AND apparatus. The patent also discusses some machinery for doing things like heating in parallel with the thing being assembled. It might stand half a chance of getting through if the apparatus is not deemed to obvious by one with knowledge of the field; but it is more than just a process.
Consistency please. The end result of a recording might be a three minute song. It takes an AWFUL lot more to actually get that song from being an idea in the mind of the songwriter, to being a recording on CD.
If you are going to compare the end result, then you should be comparing it with how long the software takes to do the job, not how long it took to write.
Fans are discouraged from writing any fiction in Midkemia or using any of the characters created by Raymond E. Feist in other settings. While the author understands this practice of "fanfic," or fan fiction stems from enthusiasm over the work, it is nevertheless a copyright infringement and an abuse of the author's legal rights. The author suggests that fans turn that creative impulse into creating their own, original, worlds and characters. It's much more entertaining creating your own universe than working in someone else's.
OK, that's the official disclaimer.
The reason I have to take this position is due to years of abuse by fans of other writers/TV shows/movies. The copyright issues are complex and often don't seem to make sense, but the financial risk to myself and my family is real. So, be the "Raymond E. Feist" of your own universe and have a blast. If you get good at it, you never know, someone might someday be writing you fan mail.
Thanks for understanding.
Best, R.E.F.
There are real concerns about this kind of thing from an author's point of view.
Even without the recording industry, there are still costs associated with the production of the album, for example studio time and people to do post production etc. Estimating all sales as purely profit is short sighted and simplistic to say the least.
It must still be said though, even with the costs involved in making the album, that's a nice wad of cash.
I am at a loss to understand why folks continue to take this man seriously. Two years running he's modified predictions so that he can say that he got them right, specifically as it looks like he has an axe to grind against the company he made the predictions against. See http://blogs.sun.com/tpenta/entry/modifying_your_p redictions_does_not for more.
I have quoted two soundbites on my blog from videos that will be shown at the announcement tomorrow (the quotes are from the information that was (I believe) given to the press.
"I think Sun has well, with this contribution have contributed more than any other company to the free software community in the form of software. It shows leadership. It's an example I hope others will follow." RMS
"Sun's policy of GPLing java which we are celebrating now is an extraordinary achievement in returning programming technology to that state of freely available knowledge that people can share and improve together. It's a crucial step in the process of turning the technology today into knowledge that people can use freely to make the technology of tomorrow." Eben Moglin
I've seen the video shorts (well some of them) that will be shown at the announcement. I think some folks will be surprised. RMS also makes reference to the java trap.
There has been a lot of folks in here commenting and asking the question about "If he finds it in violation, then what?", how about the converse question? What if Eben finds that it is not in violation?
Novell has copped an awful lot of crap over all of this. SJVN has also written an interesting perspective pointing out that Novelle is not SCO and a lot of the angst that is being directed asgainst them is quite possibly unwarranted.
You know somewhow, I can't see everyone who has bagged Novell over it coming out and saying "oops I was wrong".
So, what if Eben finds that it is compatible with GPL?
In the current development kernel, Raid-Z2 gives you double redundancy. This should be in one of the forthcoming updates to Solaris 10 (it didn't make update 2).

Sun Releases ZFS

I'm interested to see the spin here as Linux being the big beneficiary of this announcement.
Surely, if the code is released, then pretty much anyone who has a use for it benefits as it canM then be built for their platform. Regardless of which variant of linux, bsd or unix anyone's partcular platform is.

I won't name the person who sent this, although I'm pretty sure I know who it was. You left Sun some time ago.
I Am actually involved with the open solaris development now. If you're going to start making accusations based on old knowledge, you should at least be game enough to identify yourself.
You will also note that at no point did I call myself a devbeloper, although I am doing some of that work.
If Linus now supports the concept of proprietry file formats and decries the reverse engineering thereof, should we shortly expect an announcement about the removal of the NTFS filesystem driver from his tree?
If not, why not?
How is reverse engineering the NTFS filesystem format different to reverse engineering the BitMover File format>
I suspect that when Linus made this statement he had not considered the ramifications, and I am looking forward to seeing a clarification.
So what are are suggesting is that Sun should have acted illegally and not ensured that their licensing was correct? Come on, I am sure you can come up with something better than that old argument (which has been refuted so many times as conspiacy theory that I'm not going to mention it here again).
What I was asking for was references of Sun Folks saying that they are specifically aiming to kill Linux. The closest comment that I have come across was the reverse, and that was Linus saying that he'd like to see Sun die. The actual quote was
"A lot of people still like Solaris, but I'm in active competition with them, and so I hope they die,"
I am assuming that this is the same Anonymous Coward who wrote the initial post that I responded to. I would look forward to seeing those words (about Sun not open sourcing Solaris) get taken back, but I won't be terribly surprised if you don't.
Excuse me, but where exactly does it say that Sun is trying to kill linux? With references please. Also note that Sun competing with companies who build distros is a completely different thing.
Well, Anonymous Coward, I look forward to seeing you eat your words some time in Calender Q2 this year.
You make mention of www.opensolaris.org . Have you actually read anything on it?
I do hope you signed up for the notification.
You may also notice on that site that to show that we are not going to keep the new and cool stuff closed, that the entire source to dtrace is present on that site as a download. The work is ongoing to ensure that we open what we have the rights to open.

Solaris Express has been available for the last year. Lot's of folks have been using to prove their environment. These are the folks who will be comfrtable going 10 into production at FCS.
By the way, Solaris 10 was FCS'd. That means SPARC, x86 and AMD/EMT.

A friend of mine had the title "Software Craftsman" on his business card.

This is a question that comes up sufficiently on Raymond E. Feists's mailing list that he has an answer in the FAQ at http://crydee.com/raymond-feist/fan-fiction-the-facts>FAQ

I've done the work getting interim security fixes available and starting the sun-alert. These thing should be available shortly.
For a commentary on getting this fixed, have a look at http://blogs.sun.com/tpenta/entry/the_in_telnetd_v ulnerability_exploit.
I'll update the blog entry with the links when it's up on sunsolve.
