    Hey, the evil karma is finally going to bite Microsoft in the ASS! Way back in the late 80s I wrote a sound driver for windows, this is back when windows with multimedia extensions was a dog, popping noises, and long delays. Well it was due to windows being too damn slow at servicing interrupts so I wrote a sound driver that would take care of all that. An NDA was drawn up between myself and Microsoft. I was going to get a wopping 1 1/2 cents per copy of Windows sold. Well... that never came to be, I got screwed. From then on I promoted alternate operating systems. Before Linux came to be I was creating Information Servers with Datatel boards and
    OS/2. And then Linux, I've been using Linux ever since. When Microsoft screwed me I never thought of suing, I figured what goes around comes around. From the sound of this latest newsbyte, judgement time is a comming.

    They should have improved on it, man I did this 27 years ago! I wasn't going agter 3D surface reconstruction, I was going after
    object recognition, and a self learning applicaiton. This is much more than just detecting a profile.

    Once MS rents thier software, then Linux will take over the world, along with OS/X unless Apple follows suit.
    Renting sofware isn't for the mainstream user and especially not for the technically savy.

    Man this is old stuff. I created wiskers for an Atari 400 computer way back in the early 80s. I was a Sr. In high school.
    The wiskers could detect a ball, box, wrench, dog bone, and pencil. Basiclly the wiskers were conductive and protruded through
    a conductive metal plate with circular holes for the "wiskers to poke through" Normaly the circuit was open.
    When an object brushed against the sensors it will close the circuit and I would detect a pattern. I had many different patterns
    stored for each object. The object detected was based on scoring, The highest score was detected as the image, if the image was detected wrong, that would get factored into my "learning" record. So the program got smarter. It was 1980 when I wrote this.
    I used a parallel to serial converter circuit to get the wisker pattern to the Atari 400. I thought it was "simple" stuff back then.

    Now that I'm 43 years old I realize the code was ahead of it's time.

    You miss the whole Open Source point. Most of us are fighting a battle against Microsoft in one way or another. The way to fight is to leverage Open Source to a point to where the computing philosophy is back to the late 70's / early 80s. When I was a kid I belonged to a user group. We uploaded and shared code on a BBS and through several magazines. Open Source is kind of the same idea.

    Also you can make money with Open Source. My Open Source experience has opened many doors for me throughout my career.

    I always earned money on custom adaptations of my code as well.

    i did my research when I bought my new vehicle. It's the first brand new vehicle I bought ever. My Element was build in East Liberty, Ohio. Not in Mexico or Ontario Canada.. It was built here in the USA. The vehicle has a high dependability rating and made here in the US, so I bought it.

    At Welchs, home of the grape juice.. the CIO started an Outsourcing Study. In order to get my yearly bonus I had to participate in that study, and also help train a "test" outsource company. Well it was a smack in the face for us. After all, who does firmware upgrades at 3:30am? Me, and my coworkers there. Well, I refused to train the outsourcing team, I always found an excuse and put it off for a year. I put my resume out on Monster.com. I never trained the outsourced company. I'd rather take them and float them down the Ganges (I think that's where Indians send thier dead in a procession or something.). I have been known to voice my opinion about outsourcing at Welchs. During a meeting I mentioned that the CIO was no better than a drug dealer since he was willing to sell out his fellow man to make a buck. Hey that didn't buy me any brownie points but damn, that's the way I feel. Sure we need to be competive but as it turns out it took 5 outsourced indians to do my job, and they still could not keep up.

    Now I have a slightly easier commute, much less traffic. better laxed dress code, You can wear jeans, sneakers, shorts.. no problem. Welchs it was Business casual. So I am much more comfortable where I am now.

    If this practice continues, then I imagine the future is going to look a lot like the old Sci-Fi techwars.

    I don't know what this guy's problem was. You download the doc, print it out. Follow the directions.

    I installed Gentoo on my AMD ShuttlePC, base install 2hrs complete with NVIDIA support, I then emerged gnome,
    some application and other tools overnight. No problem.

    I installed Gentoo on my PowerMAC DP G5, same deal no problem! And It's the only Linux distribution that works with the thermal management system well.

    I installed Gentoo on my PowerMAC G3 two year ago, I also use that as my internet gateway, web server, imap server,
    php, you name it. All with a 30 minute base install and then a script I ran overnight.

    gentoo is great! It's optimized for your system.

    Sometimes you can't live closer to work. I work in Hyannis, MA, and live in Swansea, MA.
    If my propery was in Hyannis, MA the value would be over 890k! I don't want to pay that or
    the taxes. I live in a nice rural town, lower property costs and lower taxes. No work in my field,
    or mostly any field. maybe if you want to pick corn, or work in retail. Most people commute.
    I commute 124 miles/day. The ride is great, no traffic. Lots of time to listen tunes on the 270watt stereo
    in my Honda Element that averages around 26mpg right now since the ride has no traffic! I used to commute with
    a volkwagen turbo beetle wich I liked, but I got 29mpg and needed to run high octane fuel. I deceided to trade it in when my
    left leg was getting stiff. Not much clutch action since the ride had no traffic, the leg just got stiff since there was no room
    to stretch.

    Real mileage is:
    My average fillup is 10.4 gallons.
    I fill 2.5 times / week
    A decent mpg car won't get you 100 miles on 1 gallon.
    Hour off by 75%
    I needed more room than what my Beetle had.
    I'm hoping by the time my honda is ready to trade in that diesel would be available in Massachusetts.
    You can't buy a new diesel vehicle in MA right now. I wanted to get a diesel Passat, Beetle, or Jetta.
    44mpg! I can't justify the TCo of a hybrid right now. Aftet you replace the batteries you do not come out ahead.
    I don't know if the smart car will be too small for me since I would like room to take gear to go camping, haul my
    telescope, haul the r/c plane and heli, bring my dog, and of course the wife and three boys.
    I had a heck of a time fitting a 4.5" Newtonian in my Bettle hatchback. Now I have room to haul a dobs!

    hmmm... The Jury is still out regarding Autism. Don't forget the study was done by a drug manufacturer. You can't trust that.
    The study must be done by a non =-biased third partity with data taken across the whole country, not a cluster of data taken from
    one geographical area. There's potentialy a problem with one of the vaccinations and an "immune" response from some kids.

    That's one for the conspiracy books. Lately I don't particularly like or trust any political party. They are all out for one thing, power. The United States isn't a true democracy, feel free to look it up, we are a Federal Republic. I'd like to see a true democracy emerge. And that's not a Democrat statement, in my opinion I look at the Democratic Party and view them as socialists.
    The republicans are total opposite but still you can't trust them as ar as you can throw them. Every month we loose more and more
    of our Rights in the name of Homeland Security. More Americans die in auto accidents than due to terrorist bombings, give me a break.

    The Orion design sucks. It's not innovative. It's got a return capsule design... YAWN! I would have liked to see the shuttle evolve into a real spaceship. Possibly jet/scram jet engines for terrestial flight, scramjet/rocket to get into space, and then
    ION propulsion once in space. Space is full of all sorts of radiation anyway, what's wrong with developing the cesium-ion thruster
    further? That could eveolve into "Impulse Power". Instead of the 5kw ION thruser that NASA used in the past, how about a
    500 megawatt ION thruster powered by an onboard nuclear reactor! That would be cool. Build a base on the moon, and launch from there. , or build an orbiting space port. That would really be cool. Look at what NASA achieved in the 60s and 70s with manned space exploration, too bad we lost vision, or we would have an orbiting space port with 400megawatt ION thrusters by now.

    the output. Go to eskimo.net or wherevet that is. It's kind of easy to make this magnetic rotating disk. You can't put a load on it because the friction would cause the motor to stop. So.. it's not really usable.

    If they are not full of crap then they should publish the schematics/blueprints to this so others can duplicate it now.

    the viking project detected microbial life on Mars in the 70's. I remember. I was a paperboy then and the news made front
    page on the Standard times Newspaper. The news was later retracted, but I do believe that microbial life was detected on Mars
    in the 70s.
