I would suggest checking out Adobe AIR http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/ It is like the flash player without the security issues of the browser. I'm not trying to disprove your concerns, I'm as paranoid as the rest. I'm just a developer trying to understand the time ahead:
    • I don't want to wait while 3GB of Photoshop crosses the wires
you would only have to do it once.
    • I don't want Google/Adobe/MS to "own" my work because of some crappy TOS
you could store your files locally
    • I don't want my work to be unavailable if my 'net connection goes down
it wouldn't. the app would only download the first time.
    • I don't want my work to be unavailable if Google/Adobe/MS goes out of business
I think it is more likely they would merge before go out of business...LOOK OUT!
    • I don't want Google/Adobe/MS searching my work to decide what ads I need to see
      see above
    • I don't want the NSA/FBI/DLC searching my work to determine if I'm a terrorist/on the wanted list/threat to Hillary
      ?
    • I don't want to be locked into paying "rent" to Google/Adobe/MS so I can see stuff later
that may happen, but not likely.
    • I don't want to be forced to "upgrade" to some new version that I hate because that's what's on offer over the 'net
You think they'll give upgrades away for free, HA!

Just because it's a web application doesn't mean you need a web connection. I imagine they'll distribute their apps not in a browser but in a client like Adobe AIR:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/air/

Think of it as the flash player but without the security issues of a browser...that means better interaction with the OS, but the app can still interact/update itself with the web.

I got my tin foil on. But, I don't know about the hypodermical thing.

However, I am sure Accenture is getting a pretty penny for this system and will get paid regardless if it is launched. The question then becomes whether they will be rehired to develop SERVE 2? I don't think this is too unrealistic to think that they will. The critics of the system are not blaming the system but rather the people's computers that are using the system. There is no way for a developer to enforce what a person has on their own machine. Perhaps we should give every citizen a SSH login and train them on a dumb terminal!

Idolization of the intangible is ubiquitous in almost every culture. Perhaps the future will be a "Snow Crash" Win-amp skin like world where WE become the stars; we can pretend to be a superstar in the virtual world. Fiction has often predicted the future; William Gibson, and Neil Stephenson have been talking about this kind of stuff for some time.

I agree, but only in to context of Capitalism. American's have the Idea that everything should be accounted for esp. big corporations. The Programming community must work together to communicate about standards.

Java is a beginning with it's jdocs. UML is a begining but the community at large must continue to work as a social entity that will preserve the freedom and power of open source.

Creating the perfect human is a slower version of Hitler's dream. The Removal of maladies such as Cancer, HIV and AIDS will inherently create a X-superior race. If we eliminate such diseases, other, potentially more dangerous ones will surface. Those Countries, most likely 3rd and 2nd world will fall victim to those new diseases on top of the old. And with genetic advancement the only solution might be a genetic mutation; inherently unavailable to those 3rd world countries. Thus eliminating races in those countries. Hitler would have never started WWII; he would just not allow Jews to have genetic advancement. With this in mind to you still think it in only YOUR choice?
